Really? Are you bringing up this old hackneyed subject again? The oil companies get no special tax breaks as compared to other corporations. All companies get to deduct the costs of doing business and one of those costs for oil companies is searching for and developing new sources. The fact that they have billions of dollars of expenses is because they are spending billions dollars of money because they need to to support their ongoing operations.
This is nothing like a Solindra - it is standard deduction for expenses for normal operations no different than a farmer's costs to plant and tend crops or manufacturer's costs incurred to make product.
