Yeah 2wd,don't think 4wd would done him any good. Me and him have always went back and forth none of the 3 JDs he has is 4wd says don't need it,extra cost.

I have a buddy down the road from me who puts up 1000s of tons a year and does not have four wheel drive either. I guess having the land in his family for 150 years helps, he knows what/where to avoid.:)

I think that is the key, knowing your ground. With my 2WD tractors, there are fields at times of the year that I don't go. But on the other hand, there are 1000s of hours piled up on the 2WD tractors that do perfectly well, if not better than 4WD. I can't see using a 4WD tractor compared to the maneuverability and steerability of a 2WD while raking, baling, hauling and tedding hay on ground I know.

Cat fever it took a big wrecker and a $400 bill, they tried get it out with two 100hp tractors.

Would 4wd got him out maybe before it started getting to bad,who knows.Without the front tires helping it's like an anchor,if they are not turning. I have been stuck countless times in 2wd on my place but I just pulled the 4wd lever. It's not just mud it's the sand, when pulling mower up some the ROW hills.

I have determined that if you buy 4wd, you will get your money back when you sell it. Same for cabs. 2wd is fine if you know your land and stay off the soft areas.

foreman--I use to do the same thing when I went out and played in my jeep. Never got stuck in 2wd that I couldn't get out of in 4wd. It was my insurance. When I got stuck in 4wd, we would always get out, but it was a whole lot more work.

It all depends on your land and the climate in your area. Here in NE Indiana I find 4wd to be very helpful. But growing up out west it would not have been near as useful. Not saying I do not like 4wd but it is that much more to go wrong and if it is not helping why get it?

4wd works great when you do a lot of loader dirt work. I don't do anything without my FEL and bucket on. It can get you out of a soft spot if you stop before getting your rear tires in too far.
