Chainsaw Sharpening question

   / Chainsaw Sharpening question #61
I have used a huge number of different sharpening systems. The Timberline creates a very sharp chain but I have difficulty getting the left and right hand cutters to be equal. I did not like the 12V Dremel style sharpener that I used. The Granberg style sharpeners work well but I found them slow. I can free hand but I am not the best at it. The nicest hand guides for in field use that I have tried are the Husqvarna ones, for example: Husqvarna Chain Roller Guide Combination .404 3/8in | SHERRILLtree They are very fast to use and do a very good job. I had terrible luck with a bench grinder - I tried special lubes and special wheels and only took multiple very light cuts on each tooth but I could always see the tooth get hotter than I wished. I have drooled over diamond sharpening blades for years and finally bought one from Diamond Wheel, Inc. to put on my Oregon sharpener. Should have done it years ago. Very sharp chains that stay sharp for an extremely long time. I think this is partially due to the diamond cutting cooler and I took the time to even up all of the cutters. Normally, I would either swap chains or hand touch up after every couple of tankfuls. However, the current chain has cut well over 15 face cord without even touching up by hand sharpening. I find that truly amazing given that I did not brush off the dirt etc where i was cutting like I normally do. I should swap the chain out now since the chips are not quite as large as they were but it is not creating dust yet. I always buy Stihl brand chain - it seems to stay sharp longer than the other brands I have used when in a pinch. Ken
o boy now you got me thinking I should buy a diamond for my maxx .i want to cut down on heat in sharpening

My apologies - I said diamond wheel but they are CBN (Borazon) abrasive wheels.

Just looked - per their web site: They can last for thousands of chains with little to no maintenance

I do remember reading some reviews where people had said they had already used them for over 200 chains.

My vote is for hand sharpening. Actually had to sharpen mine twice today, yes I went through two tanks of gas/oil. Lots of wood being cut here on the property!

Light touch up and keep it out of the dirt and for God sake don't kits any rocks! Trashed a chain the other day hit a rock I didn't see. That chain went into the bench sharpener, or at least it will once I get around to it.

Did you see my note that you want the CBN Borazon wheel, not diamond?

Call Amazon support - they can redirect the package back to themselves and then you can order the correct one. Or worse case, refuse delivery. But I will say Amazon is very good at these things. Not sure if you bought it directly from Amazon or not.

They say on their web site to only use diamond on carbide and to only use the CBN on steel.

Not sure I speak your language, but dressing sticks are normally used to shape the wheel edge.

We call them dressing stick or jointing stone in the lumber planing business
I found a paper they buried in the box its for cleaning and exposing new grit

You won't need to clean or expose grit with a chainsaw sharpening wheel, but you will need to re-shape it periodically. Especially for wheels used to take down the depth rakers. They need to be trued back to flat periodically. The round wheels used for sharpening cutters need less touchup, but they do get out of shape after a lot of use and will need to be re-shaped.
