When I dig a hole, I usually put something in it. Thus I've never asked that question myself

There's no science to it at all. It's simply that Boss don't like Luke's dirt in his ditch.
Ha, ha, ha, ha. Really funny and is the only thing that makes sense in my experience. But I do like the waxing and waning moon stuff also

That works great until the body rots down, and then you have a depression marking where you put the Revenuer.

Compaction, swell, moisture, and void space are the answers ya'll are looking for.
I've always wanted to buy an old quarry pit, cut it into post hole size pieces, box them, and sell as post holes. I never could figure out what to do with all the leftover odd-sized pieces. No one wants nail holes or gopher holes.

Bottle them as "instant hole" under the Acme label and sell them to the coyote.

To add to this quandary--I dig a hole for a tree that is in a 5 gallon pot. Put the tree in the hole and STILL do not have enough dirt to fill the hole back up level
