Dubo,
repairing cylinders depends on several factors.
Cylinder assembly style. Some have large snap ring that can be difficult to remove while others may require a spanner wrench to get the end cap off.

Some safe means of pulling the piston rod assembly out of the bore. Smaller cylinders are usually less challenging that the bigger ones.

Then do you have the capabilities to safely hold the rod without damaging it to unscrew the nut holding the piston onto the rod.

If the bore is scuffed do you have a hone to remove any slight surface imperfections?

The are some of the things that make cylinder repairs simple or extremely difficult for the average shade tree mechanic.

If this were my tractor I would take a close look at how the cylinder is assembled and then decide.

  • It's a small cylinder maybe 24" retracted. It has a spanner wrench type head.
  • I have a descent sized vise recently purchased from an estate sale but I need to mount it.
  • I don't own a hone but I have access to one.
  • Oh and I consider myself 1 notch above a shade tree mechanic. lol I've included a pic of my garage below.

If that is your shop, I think you should take it in for repair.

I couldnt imagine working on a messy hydraulic cylinder in there. Would hate to get a bit of oil on the floor/bench:laughing:

Lol! I just had the floors done a few months back too to prevent future oil stains. I have a floor resistant to must chemicals except battery acid and brake fluid.

Holy Magruder there dubo - you could just pitch it on that floor and start eating. Nice job. I kinda think LD1 has the right idea - - I wouldn't think you would want to mess up that shop or floor either.

LD,
You have to look at this from a different perspective .
1) you can use the car lift to help pull the cylinder apart.
2) You can then use the lift to help push the cylinder back together.
3) When you drop something you might actually be able to find it very much unlike my work area....

Dubo,
nice looking shop and wish you the best on rebuilding them cylinders. My first question is will you be able to find the root cause of failure. I would suspect possible seal damage during assembly since this is such a low hour failure.

Thanks for the kind words.

Hopefully the root cause is determined. At minimum I hope the rebuilds are the fix. I値l update as soon as I have one.
