Now ready for the concrete in the pole barn

I builty current shop using all metal conduit and boxes. Raplaced a previous shop that burned from unknown causes. My electrical supplier suggest metal conduit to reduce risk of electrical fire. If anything goes wrong and shorts within the system the metal condicts the short back to the main and trips the breaker.

I'm wiring my new shop the same way.

With metal conduit as you said eliminates the need to pull a ground wire ! I got pretty good at bending the pipe as the counties around Chicago where we used to live required every building to be run in metal conduit.

Got my concrete guy scheduled for this coming Friday ! He came out to look at the barn this morning. Going with 5" 4,000psi, fiber mesh and some rebar, saw cut expansion joints and trowel finish all for the low price of $4,600. It will be less if it doesn't take the 27 yds he quoted me, he just doesn't like to run short since the ready mix plant is 45 minutes away. He has been doing it for 30 years. I did have another concrete guy come out yesterday. He does mainly big parking lots, building slabs etc. He must have thought I had gold in my wallet....his price was $13,000 !!! There is only 1 ready mix plant in the area as we live somewhat remote in the mountains, which is why it is hard to find contractors or anyone with building skills to come out this far....so you pay alittle more for deliveries and skills. The concrete is $125.00 a yard and they consider anything less than 10 yds a 'light load' which adds a $125 fee if under 10 yds ! I have always paid light load fees for anything under 5 yds, but I have to remember where we live ! Got all the stone put in today, will rent a plate compactor on Monday to vibrate and pack it down.

I'm not an electrician, but I would be surprised if you can use the conduit in place of a ground wire.

If its available a little bit of water on the stone will help it compact better.

Prepare to be surprised!

Per the NEC, EMT can be used as an equipment ground.

So if you are doing radiant slab heat, what’s your plans for insulation? How are you forming for around the garage doors for the thermal break between outside and inside?

Look around your area for a place that needs a small walkway or entrance slab and get it prepared just in case there is extra concrete on the truck then you will have a place for it.
Wheelbarrow/tractor bucket ready too to move it if needed.
I always hated sending back a 1/4 - 1/2 yard!! You never really know how much is left in the truck either.

There is no radiant heating. That was someone elses picture of their barn floor with radiant heat. I will probably put a wood stove in though, just doesn't get that cold here for extended times.

Have let the air dry it out the last 2 days from rain that got in....but will put a light mist on it when I use the compactor.

Correct ! As long as you make all the connections metal to metal there is no need for a ground wire. One of the advantages in using EMT.

I would put in a green ground to be sure.

Everything is ready for 26 yds of concrete tomorrow! I only put rebar and wire mesh in certain spots where the rv will park. Plus extra rebar in the apron. entrance. Will also have fiber mix @ 4000psi. 2 extra areas for extra concrete left. I always use plastic for a condensation barrier.

I’d dowel those two outside pads back into the inside pads.

Looking really good!

I told myself this spring that I was going to finish (wall and insulate) the inside of my barn this summer. Odd how many other projects you get doing instead of the ones that you actually want to do! I have the bottom 8' of the walls done and built the loft. Still the top 6' of the walls and the ceiling to do. I'm thinking I will have a project for NEXT summer!

Glad to see you getting this done. What a difference it will make.

Didn't give it a thought ! Good tip. I will just drill through the grade board and run some rebar between the 2 pads.

Was going to do it myself in sections....then the dear wife spoke up and said...NO just do it all now !!! It will be nice to have it all done at once...as they say, don't move things in until you get the floor poured.
