Another vote yes for the Hobart 210mvp.

The chart inside the cover works well with setting wire speed and voltage.

The 110 volt is nice to just tack up or weld light stuff.

I’ve welded 1/2” steel on 220 with .035 wire that made me look like I knew what I was doing. That is saying a lot btw.

I started with flux core but now have flux core, steel, and aluminum spools in a spool gun with a bottle of mix and one of argon for aluminum.
Mine has never given me any trouble whatsoever.

It is a heavy little monster though!
But mine stays on a cart.

I decided on the Hobart 210MVP. Now I have to figure out my best plan to adapt my shop's 50A welder circuit, which currently has a 10-50 receptacle, to something that supports the Hobart's 6-50 plug but also the 10--50 of my Lincoln AC-225. Changing the receptacle to 6-50R and using some type of adapter for my Lincoln seems like the right path.

Your choices would be make a pigtail adapter for the new welder OR preferably upgrade your wall receptacle to 6-50 to accommodate your new welder and replace the plug on your Lincoln with a new 6-50 plug.

Shopping list: 6-50 wall receptacle and 6-50 plug.

This way you will be ready to go when you buy your NEXT welder.

EDIT. old grind gives a much better option a few posts down.

I'm pretty sure it will be best to swap the receptacle to 6-50 because the Hobart will likely be used far more than the Lincoln. I could definitely replace the plug on the Lincoln but I'm leaning towards an adapter/pigtail instead. I just like to keep stuff original.

Going back a page or two on Vertical Down Mig. If you have a machine that has Twin Pulse frequency control options you can go up down back and forth round and round and sideways. It's the same as vertical up. True Twin Pulse Mig changes everything and the old manuals will soon need to be re-written. The future is now and Basic Mig welding is ramping up.. Usually it doesn't matter because most do very little out of position welding with Mig but good luck if you do. Tig too ever heard of a Synergic Tig Welder? Select tungsten size, material thickness and the machine does the rest? I have one. It optimizes the process and you can still run the foot control for heat and ramp. Miller and Lincoln have done well to keep this technology out of the states but it's here now with Mig and Tig. The old rules no longer apply and things will progress very rapidly in the next couple of years. This stuff is my specialty so I'm sorry to bore.

Thread drift here but I’m interested in learning more about TIG and way to get into it as a hobbyist. Good quality equipment and so forth. Are you saying to be patient before diving in buying a machine?

Glad to hear you got that figured out. Let us know how it goes for you.

Rob, I got this guy to use 6-50 plugs in my 10-50 outlets. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07R3FP8G9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

All our outlets are 10-50 and fused/wired for full loads. This keeps things simple, and rather than buy a 25' 6-50 extension cord and put the adapter at the wall I bought a 20' 10-50 cord (6Ga) and can use the 6-50 adapter at the end of that.

Congrats on your choice of machines. I had only one other I would have recommended as highly, if for a few hun more. (Everlast PowerMTS211si).

btw,
There's no substitute for hood time and a good instructor for a start in the right direction.

btw,

Thanks. I found that one in my searching last night too. Expensive little buggers though! Looks like $50-70 for any solution I come up with besides cutting the AC-225 cord and swapping plugs.
