Got a couple of apple trees in my front yard and the apples are a PIA when mowing. I usually end up gathering them up two or three times a year and dumping them back in the woods.
Knock came to the door one day, a guy driving by who lived up the road and asked if he could gather up the apples for deer, my reply was, "For sure, help yourself anytime you see a bunch feel free to stop in. Actually give me your cell and I'll shoot you a text when there's a bunch to be gathered".
Worked out great for me, great for him, even offered me some deer chops (which i declined btw, not a wild meat type of guy). He was a perfect stranger who dropped in out of the blue and I have no problem with that, as long as you say your piece and then leave.
My idea of a perfect neighbour is ones who's cordial...from a distance unless they need something in which case I will do anything to help but one who keeps to their self.
I am not a sociable person but nor do I consider my self rude, unless being rude to in which case I can chuck it back as well LOL..............Mike

In my last house the neighbor behind us was always out working on his lawn. Went to say hi one day and he just mumbled something. A week later, wife went out to say hi, he just ignored her. A week later him and his wife were out vacuuming his rear deck with a house vacuum.
We think he did not like us we had some leaves by the fence line as we could see him one night (!) going out to pick up the 20 or so leaves from my side of the fence.

He was a strange cat. Found out later, he did not talk to anyone, just rode his mower around all the time, don't think he even had the deck running. He had about an acre, with his house and driveway taking up most of it.

Other neighbors, some I still talk to, some I don't , but someone stopping by to say hi is good in my books.
I would give him a chance, but be as wary as you feel necessary. We were not there at the time and did not get the body language etc.

Doofy consider the Ozarks. Good weather and mostly friendly neighbors. the only ones watched closely, usually have Michaign plates
Bought a small plot of land next to our property. mostly to get the old trees for timber.
after the survey met the next-door neighbor and he had lived in a shanty type home .nineteen years and I had never met. didn't even know anyone was living in the house. Had to explain to him his underground storm cellar was not on his land but to continue to use if needed. just don't lock the door should I need to find a hidy hole if in the area.
Been 2 years now and have not seen him since.
I like quiet neighbors.

Thanks for the input. It is rather difficult trying to find the perfect place for the rest of your life. Still have family in Texas though (that could be either good or bad). We want a place with great climate and few natural disasters. We want a small, friendly town with a fairly low cost of living but with an abundance of stores and restaurants and good medical care. We would want to rent or buy and not build. Been in the Boonies for way to long and the wife deserves better.

Nix the Ozarks. Wife had Boot Camp at Fort Leonard Wood...miserable weather.

All I can say is I'm glad the op don't live next to my farm. I'd have to go over and 'adjust ' his attitude with a fresh load of cow manure dumped next to the property line and left for a while. Nothing beats the stink of fresh manure on a hot day when the wind is right...

Fresh isn't bad at all,
out of a liquid manure pit is rank.

Neighbor up the road fertilizes his field with chicken manure once a year. Stuff stinks - and we live downwind from him. We do not complain, it's part of the normal farming operations and the smell will go away in a couple of weeks. His field always looks pristine and the best one around.

Years ago while working in Vermont I was travelling past a little ice cream stand surrounded by fields. It was that time of year and they were spraying liquid manure... perhaps there was no overspray onto the ice cream shop but I never stopped there.

My uncle use to get a pickup truck load of chicken poo every year for his lawns, and during a hot spell we could smell the odor from our house, 2 blocks away.

And my cousin had to mow the lawns at least twice a week because it grew so much faster.

Place up the road used to get fish guts and store it in large 2,000L tanks. Come spring they'd load it into tanks pulled behind their tractor and spray it on their organic kiwifruit orchard. Geeeez it was high. always drove fast past there and never ate organic kiwifruit.

Here in Michigan under RTF, you have exactly 48 hours from the time of application to chisel it in. I know, had to call the DNR on the guy who farms next to my farm. he applied semi solid manure and left it sit and the stink was over the top. I called, they came out and he did what he was supposed to do and probably got fined too. Don't play that game. I have cattle as well and I incorporate my manure ASAP.

I should of explained my comment better.
Nothing wrong with Michigan people. But. When they move into the area always want the place changed to what it was like back home. Have an example a few years ago walking into a plant nursery, this over loud aggressive woman. was telling the business owner that trying to grow a garden the place was to rocky. and mentioned potatoes. I interrupted and said it is easy just dig them all and when cooking the ones that stay hard are rocks throw these into the driveway.
She got into her Michigan plated car and drove off.
The nursery owner said thanks.
Doofy was in Alaska around 2001 just after the earthquake and the rebuilding of the highway. Was surprised most of the equipment operators were women. asking about this was explained most men are hunting or fishing for only around 100 days to do construction work . was there for the 4th July and soon after that cold drizzle rain and snow we packed up and returned south.
Ft. Lenord Wood is in Missouri any military base is located in an area not fit for man or beast.

Ken,
Totally agree. If folks want a new place to be like the old place...why even move? I want our new place to be completely different. I want less cold and snow, I want more than one restaurant or grocery store to choose from. I want 4 distinct seasons to enjoy not just winter or mud. I truly love the beauty and freedom of Alaska but my wife deserves something new and different. I think we would bloom wherever we are transplanted.

His is a common complaint. Here it's people from Massachusetts and New Jersey... they don't understand why we get tired of hearing "If this was New Jersey" like that's the yardstick everybody should follow.
In upstate New York I believe that it's the people from NYC who move in, then try to change things to what they came to get away from.

My folks snow bird in Florida. You are shunned if you try to tell people how things are done "up north".

Man - am I glad I live out here without some of you guys as neighbors. The guy went over to the workers to see if the owner was around. He then came right over and introduced himself. What in the H*LL would you expect.

Okay. I JUST came across this thread and I am FIRMLY in the camp of others who think like oosik posted.

My grandparents bought a trailer in a trailer park in Lake Land, FL back in the 60's. Most of the people in that trailer park were Hungarians. Most were from Chicago and surrounding areas, like South Bend. That trailer park was EXACTLY like any other Hungarian neighborhood you'd find in any midwestern town. They made it just like home, only no snow.
