IMO...The only difference between good quality used attachments and new is the added profit margins...which can be as much as a good used attachment...!

Any Car salesman will tell you that the profit margin is much higher in the Used Car department.

It's the amateurs that annoy me. At least the professionals are a little better at it.

Yeah if you're dealing in cars...tractor implements are not cars...
it's about value...many used implements have as much or more value than new one that cost twice as much...!

I've tried using a landscape rake to clear about an acre of land. Prior to planting into wild grasses. Unfortunately the landscape rake didn't do a good job.

I DID clear all the rock though. A wheel barrow and bending over for each and every rock.

I'd agree. Before I used our landscape rake - the old Woods in all the photos above - I had the idea that I would go over an acre of dirt and rocks and somehow magically turn it into cleaned dirt with neat windrows of rocks conveniently stacked off to the side. Well, a landscape rake doesn't do that. It just cannot handle the combination of loose stones and half buried rocks. It bounces, shudders, jumps, clogs, and throws things... It has a place, but it isn't for rough work. Worth a try, but don't expect much. I used a rock bucket on the FEL myself. It took forever.

The landscape rake is great for ground that is already kind of smooth - gravel drives or smoothing a corral or arena. Just right for breaking up clods and smoothing the ground after roping.
It probably won't de-rock your pasture. At best it might help.

There are 3pt tools that are made to derock a pasture. I believe they are called "Harley Rakes".
Pricey, though. #10K/20K & up. I've heard that some Rental Yards have them.. I might try that myself.

I wish I were that good at finding deals on used stuff but I'm not. Plus, I'm not good at restoring equipment -- Of any kind. Maintain it? Improving/modifying it? Oh yeah. Restoring it? Nope.

I'm pretty good at finding deals on new stuff. I'd say I'm above average on that. But used? Nope. Almost everything I've ever bought used, I was eventually disappointed in it.

But, to your point, I might want a 2-bottom plow later on and there's no way I'm buying new. Not a chance. So I see your point. But on some things, there's just no point in buying somebody else's headache.

The trick to finding quality used implements is shopping...you have to put in the time and be ready to jump...have cash on hand...auctions are many times no better than buying new...you just have to watch the local ads every day and be ready...

Yes time can be your friend. I was searching for 2 ish years and found 4 different rakes in about 6 months.
As other users have said sometimes used auction items go for virtually new prices and other online sales are overpriced even if high quality.
Ended up finding an hd york rake with wheels, hydraulics and scarifier for a good price but it needs some work.
The york must have had a fold down blade originally but was missing when I bought it and the brackets for it were damaged

This 7 foot Woods is their medium duty rake with decent spring teeth, a flip down grading blade with removeable end caps, two trailing wheels, and is adjustable for angle and height.

A flip down blade is a great option if you do not have an alternative but will never be as strong as a dedicated unit

Thanks to EVERYONE for all the quality responses. I'm reading over and digesting. I will mention for a laugh, the salesperson at my local tractor shop didn't know what the mounting plates on the top of the rake were for. Its now clear to me they are for optional wheels he didn't have in stock. I'll also mention that around where I live (Southern Oregon) its hard to find used implements, and reasonable priced ones seem to go fast, for all the good reasons mentioned aove. Thanks again for helping me slowly progress past novice. Best best community out there. Feels like everyone is on the same side, even if there are disagreements.

You are certainly welcome. And you bring up a good point that it is becoming hard to impossible to find good used implements. But they have to be out there somewhere. Maybe we just haven't stumbled on the right searching technique yet. Frankly I wouldn't waste my time with chasing advertisements or auctions.... or expect a new tractor dealer to have old implements to sell.

Now, if you could find a used shop that does farm machine repair in a small ag town ...somewhere local would be really nice. Asking at that kind of shop that might be worth while. Those old mechanic-owned repair shops are like museums for tractor heads like us. Used to be you could spot those shops in farming country by the line up of old implements parked in a row by the road.
