welding carts

Hmm, that tough plywood should make some good kindling being near a welding operation.

Sure hope a tough plywood welding table is out of consideration, ha.

Nice looking cart.

Good luck, KC
If 3/4 plywood was painted with some aluminum paint it could make a good welding bench, right? Who needs steel?

🤣 That's funny. However, I do use a piece of plywood on sawhorses for my work table. The burn marks and charred gouges just add character.

I visited my favorite scrap yard about a week ago. The owner said people are hanging onto all the good scrap metal. He's getting things like scrap window ac units and basic metal junk. Not getting expanded metal, tubing, angle... I did manage to find one piece of heavy wall tubing I was looking for lying in the mud.

If you come across some useable metal, might want to get it.

My deluxe welder is supposed show up on Tuesday. Of course I have no way to power it yet but I got my eyes open for used generators and see about getting a plugin installed. We are still in the midsts of winter here. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

I do the same, most of my torch and welding work happens on a pair of sawhorses. Just be sure to store them outside, when you're done for the evening. I've personally had wood flare up an hour after exposure, and thankfully I was still in the area to catch it. Real surprise, as I'd done the same thing 100 times before with no issue.

I vaguely recall reading that mig welding can throw sparks 35 feet which caused me to move my mig welder outside to a metal shed away from the house, and all of my welding is now done outside of that shed. I was lucky to find a metal top in the garbage dumpster and built a stand from bedframe rails to use as a welding table. Today, the garbage station people won't let you dumpster dive for anything around here even if it is in plain sight on the top of the heap.

Here is something different for the welding cart topic,,,

I have purchased several of these,, and cover my welders, plasma torch, and the pic is the cover for my CNC torch control.

Waterproof 600D Heavy Duty Boat Engine Hood Covers - Fit for Motor 115-225 HP

controlCover.jpg

This cover is 600D fabric, which seems good for indoor use.
My CNC torch control sets on a plastic audio/video plastic cart that I had.
It is sturdy enough,,.
I hated worrying about the other shop projects getting dirt/dust. etc on the expensive electronics.
Sometimes the laptop is here, also, this cover will protect it also.

I have two welders, they both wear covers,, also.

These covers only cost $10 to $27,, cheap compared to constantly cleaning expensive equipment,,

I made this one from junk that I had laying around. The top is a piece of heavy gauge 12” c-channel. I don’t like small castor wheels on carts.

One of my old barns fell down on a big-wheeled dolly, making pretzels out of the handles, so I cut them off and used the remains for the back legs of the cart.

To move it in and out of my shop, I grab the 1” threaded rod on top (while wearing my welding gloves) and tilt it back on the big wheels. It rolls around good, even over steps and sort of large debris.

When the weather outside is good, I prefer welding out under the side porch, so that I don’t need to worry about sparks inside the building. The cart is out under the porch in the photo. My metal shop is thru the man-door to the left of the cart.

My arc welder sits inside, to the right of that door, with plenty of cable length to reach outside, and my oxygen and acetylene bottles are on another small cart, inside to the left, again with hoses long enough to reach outside.

Good for keeping dust off.

Nice cart Mr Arly, one thing to watch out for is hot slag on those pneumatic tires, I see the practicality of easily moving the welder and tank around however in my experience, fixing an old pull behind lawn trailer, burnt a hole right thru the cheap 2 ply Chinese wheel and I wasn't really welding around the tire.

That’s a beauty Big Barn. I see where the name comes from. I like the portable welding curtain. My metal shop is only 10 ft x 12 ft. I made it, in the corner of my 36 ft x 50 ft metal-sided pole barn, adjacent to a 20 ft x 12 ft wood shop. You can see my arc welder on its cart and my oxygen acetylene cart in there.

Both of those small shops are below a 30 ft x 12 ft post and beam loft, that I made inside the pole barn, from materials recovered from my great great grandad’s old “1883” barns. Those were made mostly from American chestnut.

In order to minimize the fire hazard, because of all the wood around and stored up on the loft above, I do most of my welding and grinding outside, under the 10 ft x 25 ft side porch :

Nice you could save that sentimental wood! (y)

I would have liked to save both of those 36’ x 46’ timber framed barns. The problem was that the foundations were failing at the same time as the roofs. Fixing them would have cost several times more than building the new metal building.

I had to take the first one down fast, because it was on the site of the new pole barn. That’s the one that fell down on my big wheel dolly, after I cut out the diagonal braces. It looked like it was leaning a bit, when I left for work that morning.

My daughter called me about noon, saying that it sounded like a couple of semi trucks had crashed on the road out front. She looked out and saw a huge cloud of dust.

Those old barns had 16 ft walls. They also had 4 layers of asphalt shingles on top of 3 layers of cedar. That made for a pretty Big Bang when they fell over. Fortunately, the only casualty from the unexpected fall was the big wheeled dolly that I used to make the back wheels on my portable welding table.

The second barn gave me a little trouble also. It was leaning towards my new pole barn. I tried pulling it down the opposite way, using 1/2” wire rope, thru a snatch block, to my largest tractor. The trouble was, the main cross beam to which I attached, and which was held by a second cable to keep it from falling earlier, snapped during the pull.

That resulted in it falling down in the direction it was leaning (towards the new barn). It missed that side porch by about 1/4”. Were it not for the possibility of that happening, I’d have made that side porch the whole 50’ length of the pole barn.

Fortunately, there were no casualties when that one went down last spring. It did take me most of the year to clean up the mess.

To reiterate. I only have very limited space to work in and I'm not buying another welder. Here is what the top of the cart looks like. This is the end the front with be sticking out from.

HF probably still sells a solid tire that is the same size as the pneumatic tire so the tires can be easily changed if needed later on.

I think there's a coupon sale on that cart going on now.

My deluxe welder showed up yesterday but i could not get it unboxed and placed in the carts top. I should be able to do this today. On a side bar I've had medical issues AND i had a job interview yesterday AND spring melt water is pouring into the basement.
