i purchased a small rod oven years ago. i did not weld enough and my rod was getting all messed up. got tired of wasting the stuff. I store only 7018 and some 7014 rod in it. rodoven 3.jpg rod oven is yellow box on left shelf.....looks messier in picture than in real life. rodoven1.jpg rodoven2.jpg. i see its 75 watts, but i have no idea what cycle times are. very well insulated as its too hot to touch inside, but barely warm outside. i have no idea of how often the unit cycles on and off or how much energy is used yearly.

K0ua, thanks for those links! That electrode id page is great as well, I printed it out.

About the 7018, do you just buy enough to use up or do you store them in an oven or special container? I don't have any stick welder experience yet other than playing around with my neighbor's buddy's welder he brought over a couple times. Right now I just need to learn on this welder, so I was researching easiest rods to learn with. 7014 was one I read about, and somebody was also writing about 6013.

I got a few project I have planned before winter, is just going to be mild steel, 5/16 and under, or even maybe 1/4 and under.

I have been very successful in keeping E7018 in just a good sealed made for purpose welding rod container with its rubber gasket seal as the lid screws down. Many will say you must store E7018 in a rod oven. However I don't have one and don't want to pay for buying one and don't want the electric bill for running one either. While my welds might not and likely would not meet codes and probably would have a few hydrogen inclusions, my welds are never x-ray'd and I NEVER EVER weld on nuclear reactor pressure vessels either.

So what if my 7018 welds might have a tiny bubble or two in them, I am not seeing them come to the surface of the puddle. Don't mean they don't exist, but I consider the tight storage of these rods for the home owner "good enough". And many other welders will agree with me. I do try to limit the time the container is open and keep desiccant in the tube and just take out the rods I intend to use right there and then and close the container. It seems to have worked for me for many years.

No doubt a fresh hot right out of the rod oven 7018 would run smoother. But I don't have a rod oven for the reasons given above.
If you do get a rod oven, don't put your cellulistic rods like 6010 or 6011 or 6013 in them as they need some moisture in the flux to run right.

Yeh same here, I don't want to do an oven. That's why I'm asking, I read somewhere that a total hack (such as I hope to one day become) would hardly notice a difference between a carefully stored 7018 compared to doing the oven thing. Not saying your a hack, just saying that I'll never be more than a hack, which is fine by me. I'm a hack machinist too, but I could run a lathe and mill good enough for my needs.

But, with all that said...nice oven, grsthegreat. Looks like a real nice space you got there, man.

Do 7014 need to be stored like that, I thought they didn't?

I AM a hack welder, I wouldn't make a pimple on a good welder's ...... :) Proud to admit it.

Now when it comes to programming several old phone systems or voice mails or even Cisco Routers, well I am a lot closer to being a pro in those endeavors. I can run a FEL pretty good too. :)

No, 7014 is not considered a low hydrogen rod. At least as far as I know. I don't even bother to put them in anything but the package they came in.

Me, I'm a jack of some trades, master of none. :D
