Amco Offset Disc

Brandi, the next time that you disk, try running on the right side of what has been disked. You may need to start in the middle. Most guys will only do 10 passes or so and then move over and start again, but a lot of that depends on the property layout. You should find that the berms that you are now getting will pretty much go away.

I'll try that sometime. The second pass was on the right side of what has been disked with right hand turns. Problem was..........it was triangle shaped. I sure hope all the little berms go away. At least the field's layout dictates the hay equipment go the same directions as I did.

I am going to pivot my front and rear gang to less of a angle by one bolt hole. Trouble is the gang angles are held in place with 1 inch "J" bolts and 1 inch carriage bolts. I would like to have new bolts before trying to loosen them, but Amco does not stock any J bolts now. I'm waiting to hear if they know of any dealers that may have some. I want to lessen the gang angles also to lessen the hp requirement, to give me more gears I could pull with. I'd be smiling big time if I could pull the disc at 2,000 rpm in 6th gear!

It might be quite dangerous on an unknown field with unknown rocks, holes, and other hazards?

I'm guessing 6th gear would be about 6-7 mph. Uh...I don't know about up there:confused3:, but down here established hay pastures don't have rocks because we don't have rocks here.:dance1: Bare in mind this field had me do 4 passes. So once I pulled the first pass...in 4th and 5th gear, I pretty well knew the lay of the land.:2cents: But you might wanna call the safety police:thumbdown: on me anyway, as I pulled the 10 foot drag harrow in 10th gear at 1500 rpm. That's 10th out of 12 gears. 12th gear would be about 27 miles per hour.

I know that I often use 4th gear instead 6th because it is faster by 1/2mph. When I am working on flatter terraine I run 3rd & 4th. On the hills I run 5th, 6th and sometimes even 7th.

I heard or read somewhere I can get 27mph at full throttle. But, I found in the operator's manual 12th gear at 2200 rpm gives me 20.45 mph.

I kept thinking of the gears in sequential order, but they are not. When I said I was pulling in 6th gear, I was actually in medium range 2nd gear. I have noticed before different gears seem to go slower than a higher gear in a lower range. So when I was pulling and wanted to upshift out of mid range 2nd gear, I should have went to 4th gear low range for a slight speed increase. Me trying to upshift to mid range 3rd gear (7th) really was too much.

Mid range 2nd gear (6th) is 4.78 mph
Low range 4th gear (4th) is 5.30 mph
Mid range 3rd gear (7th) is 6.97 mph

So really I should have been upshifting from 6th to 4th instead of sequentially from 6th to 7th.
I checked and I have a gear/mph range chart on the fender, but it is so low, it can't be read while seated. If I did a lot of ground engagement work, I would get another chart and stick it on top of the fender to see at a glance.

So I was pulling the drag harrow at about 9.92 mph.

I pull my wing fold disk at 7 mph if the ground is smooth enough. My finishing harrow, again if its smooth enough, at 11.

I was chasing the sun setting. I forgot to add that I was running 1500 rpm pulling the drag harrow, so I am guessing around 7.5 mph or so. Also, the drag harrow was smooth side down and was I was making a pass with it to just help smooth and knock down the ridges.

I dismounted the backhoe this afternoon and hooked up the disc. My friend that is staying in his RV trailer on my property asked if he could have a garden. He wanted it near his trailer. Which is in a clear spot with trees all around. It was so tight........... I could not turn around. I just backed in and made 4 passes in one direction and it was all ready to hill. The space was not much longer than the disc and tractor with loader combined...................but I Got-her-done!

I'm making some calls tomorrow to try and find out all I need to do to get ready for disc time! I'm also going to be building a land plane hybrid to level the pasture out before seeding! I picked up an ibeam a while back for a gantry project but the loader replaces it so its being repurposed.

I, too, would love to find one of those. Small, heavy duty offset discs with gauge wheels on a rockshaft are scarce as hens teeth around here. I figure a 6 foot one would have my tractor begging for mercy, but I'd sure like to try it.

Offset discs are heavy and pull hard but they really do the job.

Buying something new is okay. But when you score a huge find like an Amco Disc, you want to shout from tall building!
I used the 9 footer today on roughly 7 acres getting it ready for seed. It was on Rustyshackelford's place. On the back side across the creek (ask Rusty how steep the approach and departure is at the creek), I didn't take the drag harrow. Rusty has a 9 or 10 foot wide homemade landplane he used there. But one pass with the disc and drag harrow around the house and yards, had Rusty not wanting to "track" over where I had been. That drag harrow is worth it's weight in gold. Anyway, I took the camera, but forgot to take any photos. We'll have to wait until Rusty can post some after the bermuda grass is up.
