Anyone else getting SLOW response?

/ Anyone else getting SLOW response? #31
Another case of a mystery problem... since my speed is as fast as always tonight and has been for weeks, a problem on the server side is hard to imagine... it all has to do with other connections/lines/routing. I'll have someone look into it tomorrow and see if anything can be discovered... but even on completely different ISPs with different routing, the problem is not there for us...

I tried clearing out the temporary internet files but didn't notice much/any difference in the time it takes to display a thread. What I have noticed is that threads with a lot of fancy signature blocks take longer to load than the ones with none or a few. It seems to be worse when the signature blocks are "off-site"...

Any substance to this observation?

Possibly... or, probably... when I get the chance I'll look into those in more detail, for sure.

Bob,
It's great knowing that there are both tractor and internet/computer experts to rely on here at TBN.

I did know that net medic was no longer supported, but I didn't know that the results are not "real" all the
time. You asked some detailed questions, so I have some detailed answers;

Computer is a 2 year old homebuilt celeron 450 with ASUS zm6 motherboard, 128 meg of PC 100 RAM, 6 gig
HD, 1 year old zoom 56k win modem - 3 week old update.
OS is Win98 first edition
browser Netscape 4.75
I tried 6.0 when I initially had the "stalls", with no change in performance, just other bugs.
ISP is CVOL.net a local provider here in Wisconsin

I am downloading a traceroute program in a secondary window currently and I will hop on it during the next
stall.

Once again, when I get a "TBN stall", I can go to a different site and get zippty quick response. I can then go
back to TBN and it is stalled. I can go to "www.tractorbynet.com" rather than just "back" and it is still stalled.
I can hop to netscape.com which loads a ton of graphics, and it's zippty quick. I'm not saying my setup or
computer is perfect (far from it), those are just the symptoms that I am experiencing.

Oh, one other thing that I notice during a stall, the header for "Tractorbynet.com" listing "home" to "links" will
often load, but the remainder of the screen is blank during the stalled minute or so.

Thanks again for the input and support!

John,

Yes, please do post trace route results next time the problem occurs...

I'm going to guess that the problem is not really with your setup since you can view without problems most of the time... but rather a problem with the routing from CVOL.net to TractorByNet.com. It makes sense that you can load other sites while TractorByNet.com is stalling, since you are taking a different route to each different site. Once you have a trace route you will probably be able to get some advice from your ISP in regards to what you can do to fix the problem...

Hi Bud,

There does not appear to me to be anything in your configuration to cause your problem. Your Netscape browser is a bit "old" but other than that, you've got plenty of horsepower.

I ran a trace myself to your ISP in WI several times tonight, and do not see any slowdowns. Yours to TBN would be different of course; I just wanted to see in general terms how the route went. Seems okay too.

Lets hope that your trace route will provide some better clues for us.

I was also unable to get to TNB last night after work - 5:30 pm. It would load 1% at a time and stalled at 33% after about 5 minutes. Tried connecting on and off for a half hour and gave up. Didn't have a problem connecting this morning at 5:30 am though.

That's consistent with what I have noticed at home (Modem/AOL). At work (T? line) it just hangs from the moment I click something occasionally (shows VERY slow progress on the little bar at the bottom of the screen (Internet Explorer).

John, Michele or Paul, and Rob, I get about the same problem you're having. Sometimes it's just tractorbynet and sometimes it's all sites, so I've just assumed it's my old tired country phone lines or an ISP that's overloaded. Last night was really slow, and it's not a matter of being slow; it's a matter of transmissions pausing, sometimes for so long that I disconnect and dial in again. And sometimes I disconnect and wait until the next morning. Everything seems to work pretty well early in the morning.

I haven't contributed to this discussion 'cuz everything has been fine from here, but maybe that very fact is worth mentioning. TBN response has been nothing short of excellent for many weeks now, and I'm on it from about 6:30 a.m. 'til midnight (PST) or later (occasionally taking time off to work /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif).

I guess I'm just supporting the notion that any slowups must have nothing to do with the TBN server. That still leaves plenty of variables, like routing problems, line quality, or maybe how many snowdrifts are between you and TBN /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif.

Of course, being in Californy, my network performance may get considerably worse when they take the power away. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
