I keep reading about fork problems people are having when using them on a tractor. Get a spare pallet. Practice picking it up a bit. Set the pallet on a trailor or something, practice a bit. Then you should be able to use your forks with out damaging whatever your moving. Standing up to see the forks makes it easy, I get the idea. Just sounds so silly to do when all it takes is a little practice so as to be able to use the tractor and forks while setting on the seat and being able to comfortably and safely use all of the tractors controls.

I disagree. It's not a lack of practice issue. What you're saying, works ok if you're just moving pallets on level surfaces. I've been driving forklifts ever since I was tall enough to reach the pedals, so it's definitely not lack of practice.

I pick lots of different and random things with the forks, you really need to see the tip of the forks most of the time. Specially offroad, when the forks are not exactly level to what you're trying to pick. Guessing is not going to work.

Our jury rigging can kill family, friends and others even after we are buried. I had a deceased friend that came close to killing his wife the next winter. He had filled a container marked Kerosene with gas. She recovered thankfully and the house was repaired. Sadly we start slipping with age and are not aware of it.

Not sure how old your JD is, but I would imagine you have more than 1 OEM switch to control the PTO. On mine, I have 3.

It's just a matter of discipline to shut the tractor and/or PTO off before you dismount the tractor. But there are plenty of times that I want to PTO running (at idle) when I'm off the tractor. I have several PTO implements that I hose off after every use, and having the PTO on helps in the cleaning and long term maintenance of the implement. (except for my mower. I always turn the PTO off when I dismount the tractor with that) Obviously, extra care and awareness are needed, but if someone doesn't know enough to turn dangerous stuff off, then they shouldn't be using it in the first place.

But I do like the idea of a safety switch on the seat if you're loaning the tractor to someone else, especially a family member.

Improperly securing tractor to a moving trailor is a separate issue I guess.
As long as the person towing the trailer has the key to be able to start machine and move it (if it's needed) to re-tension the chains it is legal to only use binders on one end of a tractor or other device of trailer.

for a geared tractor, yes. but how about an HST. i stand on ground and move my tractor back and forth with peddle to hook up implement. that being said, i did have a startle last week. the HST return spring popped off while operating in heavy brush. its quite a start to have the tractor keep going after i lifted my foot off of the peddle. all i had to do was quickly press the reverse till it hit center, but if that happened to the wife, it might have been different. im going to instruct her about possibility this weekend. im going to also try to fabricate a shield to prevent this from happening again. first time in 10 years it happened.

I roll my bucket. That way it stays grounded and holds the tractor where I want it. I never thought of using the pedals, probably because my last tractor was geared so the bucket was the only option.

I under stand what your saying. All I am saying is no guessing should be needed, especially with long use. Now swapping from machine to machine and never getting comfortable with one machine would be a big problem.
