car engine driven log splitter

Like Czbilly, there was one built around here that had a 4 cyl continental, and a 4" ram out of a garbage truck. Had a jury-rigged 8-way splitter and when demo'd on some wood we would share, it just made mush outta the oak and elm squeezed through the splitter. :)

But not to discourage skenk, maybe rip off the body, drop a ram over the chassis, and add a hyd. lift. Put a pump off the front of the engine crank, and drive it to your wood. Now that would be a parade item. :):)

For sure, we would like pics.

Weld a multi-section wedge onto the front bumper. Then place a log in front of your garage door. Run the car into the wood and presto....:D

Recently I saw a small block chevy powered splitter on Craigslist. I suspect there is a point at which the inefficiency of the splitter you are using outweighs the cost benefit of burning wood for heat.

Why bother with the hydraulics feature. Just weld a larger rim on the one already on the front end and then weld an Axe head to that. Very slow rotation and place a chuck of wood down to be split about every second revolution. Chain the other front wheel to the frame so it can't move.

It shouldn't break the pocket book!:D:D

Don't forget to wear goggles! :D

Visited the neighbor yesterday. He showed me his home brew splitter in the garage. WOW! Then he took me outside to see the SERIOUS one!! It had a four cylinder with radiator, without transmission. It was from a 1958 German something-or-other. Chain drive to a rather large pump dumping to a rather large control that was connected to a HUGE ram from "underneath a dump truck". He used it at one point to crush 600 (six HUNDRED!!) rims from tires. It folded them up and they dropped right out from the rubber!! This guy is magic with fabricating and welding.

Has anyone thought of using a car to drive a hydraulic pump for a log splitter. I have a 93 civic that I was thinking of using - body is shot but engine/tranny a still good. Basically put the car on blocks, remove the wheels, lenghten the drive shaft and connect to a pump. Given its 1.5 litre engine puts out about 100hp it should have no problem driving a good sized pump, without working the engine.

I am sure with the right pump, you could use a 48" cylinder, split slabs green, stack to dry then use a buzz saw to cut to size.

there was a 4 cylinder water cooled log splitter on Craigs List a couple weeks ago for $600. It looked like a very sturdy unit

I don't think the fuel consumption would be very high as you'd just run the engine at an idle. For sure use a belt drive pump vs. trying to rig something from the axles. Put it in place of the power steer, or A/C.

If you leave the muffler, etc in tact it would be one of the quietest log splitters around.

Get us some pictures of this car.
