chain harrow question

   / chain harrow question #21
Original poster here, anchoring the pull chain so it was fixed and could not slide around the hitch ball solved the problem. The ground is too wet to till right now so I had some time for innovation, I have a boom pole that was not being used so I unhooked the chain harrow and hooked up the boom pole and added lift chains and reconnected the pull chain so I could lift for transport and when at end of a drag row. Adjusting the length of the front and rear lift chains is critical because the front must lift up first when lifting from the ground and the rear must go down before the rear when letting down- if not he harrow will try to fold up as opposed to going down flatView attachment 503810.

Where did you buy that 6' x 5' chain drag with pull bars on BOTH ends?
I can find the 6' x 5' size sold by Agri-Supply, but it does not have a pull bar at both ends.
I would LOVE to find the make/model that you have.

One of my intermediate term tasks is to build a framework to hold an 8 ft x 8 ft harrow with 3 pt hitch. Maybe buy one at auction if it shows up. These are great harrows but for my use the grass just bunches up and creates problems.

I am about to buy a chain harrow, and make a lift out of my boom pole as shown by OP "Oldstuff" above (and I thought mine was an original idea).
I would really like to get a 6' x 8' harrow, but note that the rig shown uses a 6' x 5' harrow.
I assume that if I were to choose an 8' harrow, I would need to fabricate some sort of extension for my boom pole.
Grass clogging the tines is an issue that I too am concerned about.
I think tine length may have an effect on grass clogging.
TSC chain harrows have 3-1/2" tines, Neat Farms chain harrows have 4" tines, Agri-Supply has harrows with 4-1/2" tines, and Unique Sports has harrows with 5" tines.
I am leaning toward the harrow with the 5" long tines, as I figure the 5" tines will clog more slowly.

They will probably all clog the same. The grass sticks in the tine and spacing wasn't an issue when I used one.

The boompole works for a short harrow but the ones that have a square framework around the harrow with chains that hang down to hook to the harrow seem to work better from what I have seen. Just an FYI from my perspective.

fried1765 I got the bar and chain harrow at Chain Harrows However, I got them last November and today do not see the 6 by 5 listed but the bars are still listed. The tines are 4 inches long as I remember. Also, yes you would need to extend the boom pole as mine is just barely long enough for the 6 by 5.

Thank you very much!
Much as I would like the 6' x 8', I think I may go with the 6'x 5' from Agri- Supply.
The 6' x 8' weighs 315 lbs., the 6' x 5' weighs 165 lbs.
I am 76 years old!
315 lbs. is just too much for me to deal with.

I made this the other day, copying another's idea, and it worked pretty well smoothing out soil that had been run over with a field cultivator. Cost about $150 to build buying everything at retail. Less Surface Trash.jpgSet up.jpgConnection.jpg

By throwing 2 counter clockwise loops in the chain and putting loop A on top of loop B you have succeeded in forming a clove hitch knot. Drop these assembled loops over the ball hitch and there will be no slip. Depending on where this knot is located in the chain, the harrow angle can be adjusted from being pulled square to any angle on the bias desired.

When chain binding front or rear of a tractor for transport, this same knot works on front or rear for a no slip connection. Need to pull a piece of pipe or log and don't have a slip hook handy, use the clove hitch. Want it a little easier to un-tie on certain applications with only one section of the chain needed for pulling, the improved clove hitch un-ties like your boot lace.

That will work right well. Easy and fast.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Anyone without art like that isn't using all their resources and I must admit I have some similar that evidently fell from the same family tree.

I don't know bout mixing fertilizer but it must do a decent job of weed control by scaring them to death as I see no weeds even close. No Round-up necessary.
