Constructing new 36x40x12 Pole barn

When I wrote of concrete cookies, I was speaking of a poured in hole footing made of concrete. I never even thought of looking into a pre cast footing. At 24 in round and 8 in thick ill bet they would be heavy. I suppose I could transport them to each hole with my fel,the slide them in and beat them into place. Might be wothwhile not to have to worry about trying to get a mixer truck to each hole in mid spring when ground is soft.

They are round and roll pretty easy, I used FEL and Hand Cart on them in past. hardest part is getting one FLAT when it lands on edge in a small hole 3' down!! lol... Learned lesson on the first one don't ROLL it into the hole! Roll it up to the side and then push it in sideways!!!! MAY have to wiggle it to the edge to avoid pile or knocking loose dirt in to the hole.

I received my second quote today. This was from an amish framer. He quoted 3200 plus $300 to $400 for a crane. This is only the second quote i have received so far, still waiting on two more. I am thinking they all will be around 3 to 4k. I dont mind paying the going rate, I just dont want to pay more. My father in law and I cleared the trees that were in the way of the building today. They were 3 red maples . All were well over 20in in diameter. Cleaned them up witth my CUT. The FEL and thumb got a work out today !!! Boy was it a muddy mess. Luckily I still have all four tires chained from snow season, otherwise I would not have been moving at all. I still managed to get stuck twice and had to bucket my way out each time.

Do you mind if I ask why you are putting radiant heated floor on the patio portion? I thought that was what I saw.

We just had 6" snow yesterday morning then last night was a mix of more snow, rain, freezing rain and howling wind for a couple more inches of accumulation.

It is supposed to get cold here starting today and remain that way until Thursday. I am actually looking forward to it. Once the top of the Ground freezes again, I can finish my tractor work without all the mud. At least now I have a VERY accurate idea of how thick the topsoil is I have to strip off.

If you're stuck with the crane rental charge anyway, why not just do it yourself?

It might take you a couple-three weekends, but you'd save your 3K.

My sister (not overly handy), my wife (not handy enough to be given a task and expected to complete it without a lot of help), and myself put the trusses up on my 11' tall shop walls in a half of a day without any mechanical assistance. We lifted the trusses up onto the cap plate upside down, then my sister and I climbed opposite walls and the Mrs. pushed the middle up with a pole. Once up, we tied the truss into place with a metal spacer (16" OC, the spacers are readily available) and then I secured the trusses into the brackets before moving to the next one.

If I had a couple buddies doing it instead, we probably would've gotten done substantially quicker, or even just had a ground crew capable of keeping the trusses coming while people were up on the walls.

We used an Amish crew when we had ours rebuilt. Cost came in at less than half what the English quote was. I like steel roofs and wood siding. Shingles are just too much trouble. The Amish rented a all terrain forklift and manlift for the work. I can tell you that I can't find anybody to rent me a forklift, much less a crane. Insurance just won't allow it. When we moved our garage I ended up buying a old utility truck with a crane. Did the project and the sold the truck for a loss because the trunion seal had blown. Only lost a couple of grand on the deal which was worth it because we got our use out of the truck.

I've found some plans here: Free Framing and Utility Building Plans If you are in a snow region, please don't forget to figure on drift. I've seen too many building collapse for that reason. Also, never have an open sided building because the wind will get inside and rip the roof off.

That part is some day maybe getting enclosed, could be a nice spot for a HOT TUB! I ended up with a LOT of extra PEX-AL-PEX so figured if maybe... I also figured that it is the NORTH SIDE so snow may blow in and I can crank that on for a bit to melt that down and dry it up.
