Constructing new 36x40x12 Pole barn

I was getting estimates for $18-22 per sq.ft for standard pole barns with metal siding and roof, labor and materials. With board/batten wood siding and asphalt roof, we're paying $33 per sq.ft (and I will paint it myself). Prices do not include site prep or floor.

Do you need permits there? When I built mine I had to have the building inspector check the pole holes that they were deep enough then inspect after the concrete pads were poured. I did a 24 X 32 with an extra 8 foot overhand on one side. After the first week I figured it wasn't big enough.

I do have to pull a building permit. The holes have to be min 48 in deep with 6 to 8 inches of concrete in bottom. Once holes are dug and concrete is poured, holes must be inspected, then framing can begin. once building is completed, then the building dept. will return to do final inspection. I wish i could afford to go bigger, but this is all that my budget will allow for. I am already planning an addition to it though lol.

I got one framing quote today, i would be responsible for site prep, building pad, post holes and concrete. The framer will set post, install wall girts, header boards, enough sheeting to stiffen building up, install trusses and paper and shingle the roof. They are figuring two days work. Rough price quoted was for $3500 to 4k. i will get a couple more to see what the consensus is.

I'd go metal, if I were you, I built a wood barn and staining it has gotten old. I would also put the service door in the same side as the overhead or slider.

I have a 24x32 metal barn already, and personaly do not care for the metal. I guess I am kinda the minority here, but I prefer a wood building. The barn will be vinyl sided so Painting and staining should not be an issue.

Take your material cost add 15% multiply by 2 for the low end, multiply by 3 for the average, you must deduct the work you perform.
