Aargh! Foiled again!

Thanks, I went back to the dealer again today and asked what the 320 cost out the door and it's almost $150 more. I think I'll get the lighter one and add some inexpensive weight to it if need be. Ian

Ian, It's not just a matter of adding weight, it's WHERE the extra 100 pounds are located on the heavier model. For example, go back and look at the sidewalls of each, 3/8" thick sidewalls are far better oh, and heavier than 1/4" plate. Everything perpendicular to your tractor on that scraper DEPENDS on the integrity of the thickness of the side walls.
Buy cheap, watch it destruct in front of your eyes, sell it off bent and broken, and then buy another cheap one. Why put yourself through that?

I'm told it has the same construction as the heavier model, but has a shorter box front to back, so less box capacity. The LT model won't be in for a couple days, but the standard they have on the lot looks real stout. I'll get some pictures. He said he's never had one come back broken.

I have a cheap one (TS) and I can't envision the actual box getting bent, I suppose other people can, but I figured out how to bend the linkage parts real easy. I tried to push backward against a small rotten looking stump, with the box up high. I could hear this crackling sound, it was the paint popping off the parts. I didn't believe it at first, so I did it again. I don't do that anymore.. The guys at the steel yard put some big hammers and torches to it and got it pretty close to back to normal.

I dont think you'll have any issues with that thing. Its so small it would take a lot to hurt it. The wider you go though thats when you have to start strengthing things 10 fold as the leverage on everything increases exponentially. Just dont do stupid stuff like turning with the box 4 inches in the ground with the box full or hitting immovable objects and you should never have an issue.

You won't have to worry about tearing that up, it is braced better than mine and I am far from gentle with it and nothing has bent yet.

So on the heavier unit, where do you suppose the extra 100 lbs are nested?

Well, I know the box is bigger front to back, but that wouldn't account for 100lbs. The others will be here this week. I'll compare them then.

Picked up the LD today. It's exactly the same except it doesn't have the outside corners and the cross tube gusseted. The corner gussets could be easily added if necessary and the reason why the short gusset on the cross tube isn't there is because of the shorter box. It's like 1/2" from the fwd side of the box, so there's no room.

In playing with it this afternoon, I have 3 complaints, 2 of which are easily fixed and one that is just a cosmetic thing that doesn't really need fixing.

1. The square tube that accepts the retaining pin for the scarifiers was just chopped and welded on without cleaning up the cuts. There's some sharp metal on there that WILL lay me open eventually if not taken off.

2. Not much care was taken for alignment when that square tube was welded on. Two of the pins have to be driven out to remove the scarifier. I'll be cutting them off and cleaning them up before getting my buddy to weld them back on.

3. The paint job is horrible. Really really bad runs everywhere. Not an issue, but a 6 year old could have done better.

All in all, I'm happy with it. I think I will put the corner gussets in and paint it Kubota Orange to match the tractor. I also realized today that there is going to be a learning curve in using this thing, and that would have been rental time had I just chosen to rent one when needed.

thanks for the advice,
Ian
