Here in the Boise area there are two pipelines that bring fuel up from the Salt Lake area. Both belong to Chevron. As you can imagine we get a serious 'lag' when prices start to go down. for instance regular is 3.94 and diesel is 4.74 at Sam's club with is cheaper than most places.

Obviously everyone is getting their fuel the same way so something is different. Additives I think probably make the biggest difference between say Chevron and a club like Sam's which likely has no additional additives beyond what might be required by law.

Lots of places like Sam's don't make much off of gas. It's more come buy some gas, and while you are at it spend $100 on other items.

I talk to our crude buyer daily (for our refinery), the products (gas) are leading the fall recently. IE in the refinery business if gas prices fall faster than crude, margins go in the tank. They are falling because inventories are down a bit but still at strong levels. But consumption is down with the recent high prices.

As you say transportation costs to deliver the fuel affect the price in certain areas. That said you would think Houston would be cheaper than everyone else, not the case. I guess then supply and demand come into play.

Stinking company still hasn't bothered to show up to deliver my fuel!! Gees, what gives?! I know my tank is relatively small, but it isn't that small! Business must be good for these guys right now.

Hey, lucky me, maybe service is still alive in the U.S. I got my tank filled today for about $3.57 a gallon since the distributor said they wanted to give me a break since they forgot about me after calling on Monday and telling me to be ready for the delivery; then not showing up. Compared to the last time I filled my tank, that amounted to saving almost $500.00 over the previous cost. I'd still love to see diesel lower, but at least it's coming down a bit.

I guess since i have no stock in Exxon/Mobil, i'd prefer the cheaper times. Especially since it has caused the price of everything else to skyrocket..... like groceries. But i suppose if you are getting rich on the current price of petroleum, that stuff is trivial to you......

I was out and about this morning, road diesel has dropped under $4 per gallon here. The range is now $3.849-3.999. Regular unleaded was $3.499-3.559.

I bought diesel fuel last friday for $3.89 at exit 118 on I-81 in Christiansburg, VA at the BP station. It is $4.19 at the local store down the road from the house and it is still $4.49 in the Roanoke, VA area.

I filled up right off exit 55 in Lexington last night and it was $4.39. Diesel apparently varies quite a bit in VA right now.

I filled up yesterday at Exit #9 Interstate 40, West side of Arizona for $4.299.

Also noticed they have finally changed there pumps. Now when you use a card you are not limited to $75. Instead of running the card at the pump twice, I was able to SPEND TILL IT WAS FULL!!

That BP is usually much cheaper on diesel than anyone else. I filled up with diesel at Wilco Hess on Orange Ave. in Roanoke Saturday evening for $4.199. Company vehicle, company card.

I wonder what causes such wide variations in prices. Surely it can't be different vendors getting different profits could it?

When I lived in San Diego and drove out through Arizona I was always amazed at the difference in fuel costs when crossing the state border and from the border to closer in toward SD. Interestingly, the fuel sold out by the state border was trucked there from San Diego and sold for less than in San Diego on one side of the border and more on the other. I'm still wondering how to make fuel cheaper by trucking it.

Taxes?

I heard a report years ago that gas is priced by geography. Best I could infer was that if you were in an area with higher per capita earnings you might be paying more for gas/fuel.

If I drive north to Burlington NC, in the past I could get fuel about 15 cents a gallon cheaper than the stations in down or if I drove east toward the more money areas. We went south a month or so ago to Sanford and the fuel was .10-15 cent a gallon cheaper. Burlington has lots of truck stops, competition, and I believe there is a pipeline terminal in that area. Sanford did have some truck stops so maybe they have competition as well. With Ft. Bragg and Pope AFB nearby maybe there is a terminal near Sanford as well.

Fuel dropped 40 cents a gallon last week. Only two cents this week so far. :D

The taxes should have been pretty much the same in both instances within CA. Of course AZ could have had different taxes.

Folks in SD were being charged more because they would pay it, not because it cost more to supply them. The terminal was in SD. Trucking to the border wasn't free.

We are essentially at the mercy of the supply chain. Few of us grow or make our own fuel. Hmm, drive a steam car, fuel it with brush.

Don't laugh when you say fuel it with brush. Check out this article in the Alabama Farmers and Consumers Bulletin: http://www.agi.alabama.gov/uploads/yj/YV/yjYVXzHpZY-QBe0oREuicw/2008AugHi.pdf
This guy lives here in Springville. He has another truck that has a boiler in the back and runs off of steam created from burning firewood. He has even been featured on the local news. It's pretty funny to see the truck sitting in the Walmart parking lot with smoke coming out the chimney while he's inside shopping.

The guy is lucky that he is allowed to leave a fire unattended and not be fined. Some places forbid leaving a vehicle with the engine running.

Oh, and I was not joking about the brush to steam. I personally like steam power and would drive one if it were practical for me.

In previous times vehicles were fueled by under oxygenated fires. They burned wood or whatever but incompletely and the combustible gases driven off were piped to the engine. I may be a bit fuzzy about my recollection but I think this was a WW II era strategy.
