Ditching job

I have 2 of those. They are trenchers, not ditchers. Used around here to get water off of crops. The Sidewinder version is really nice because the blade runs in the right tire track.

Maybe semantics, I've always heard them called ditchers- maybe its a Tennessee Valley thing. Regardless though, they do have a 5 footer, maybe larger. Seems that for something 3' deep or less that it could work. Just wouldn't have the fill for berm unless you go back through and pick it up. Does seem faster than using an excavator though.

Again, maybe I'm thinking too far outside the box - I've been accused of that in the past.

I think a 6k mini is way under powered. I have a 12k and sometimes I wish I had more.

Your going to be at it for a while with that machine.

I have a 9000 lb machine with a 24" and wouldn't attempt more than digging up a stump.

Have you considered a Gradall? Their reach is exceptional and following a ditch contour is a breeze

An 8x16 GN dump with folding sides and an optional super single tire would be great, but probably $20,000.

It sounds like you should invest in a Hurricane Ditcher to do this the simple way.
You will make more money and not have a rental expense as you will be using your own mule.
It can be equipped with a laser GPS system to maintain the needed grade control for drainage.

The problem with a gradall is it is slow, they are prone to hydraulic leaks and grading after the ditching is done will require a small finish dozer and renting or leasing one is a year long contract expense.

The ditchers are faster and can make multiple passes with just time and fuel if needed.

You guys are talking Dude into a ditch. Unless I have skin in the game as a partner in this project, I wouldn't encourage him to walk off the ledge. I love him too much.

Now, why would Dude be invited to do this ditch job? If I were the property owner, I wouldn't let any contractor, let alone a hay farmer, bid on this work unless he has proven capability. This is a land drainage situation and the topography is involved. A surveyor is needed to determine the slope of the ditch. And even if the pegs are driven to guide the excavation, can the machine operator dig that ditch within tolerance? Imagine letting a hay farmer cut your hair. Only a fool would allow someone to learn on the job.
