DT transmission Vs HST transmissions any drawbacks for longivity ?

I too think everyone should choose what makes them happy.

My biggest gripe with all the HST vs gear debates is the gear people will say yes the HST does some stuff better but most HST people won't say yes the gear is better at anything such as pulling bigger loads better and climbing hills.

Why would you want to handicap the gear? Let it pull the hill In whatever gear it can without downshifting. It's not as simple as you make it if you start up the hill in range two on and HST and you run out of power you have to stop and down shift too.

I'm going back to being a spectator of this forum.
Have a good one guys.

I live in the hills and I can direction and speed multiple times when rotary cutting my trails. When I used to run my IH 424 it was unnerving to stop clutch it in change gears and make sure you didnt you didnt miss a gear. It was a 2 wheel drive which made it less capable but I kept chains on it year around. The HST never lets go of the tractor it only slows down and changes direction. Now if I were on flat ground and pulling a plow or disc all day then I would go with a geared machine. But for my situation HST is the safest for my work but maybe not the best for others. I only have flat places between the hills and not very big flat places at that. Tractor hey there all good, big, small, geared, HST, I like them all. I just cant afford them all. :D

Doesnt matter about the hydro vs gear debate, either are much better than no tractor, they key is make sure its a Kubota

That is how a hydro works. You are telling me you have never had to let off the forward pedal when climbing a hill? Do you go everywhere in first range?

Ask every HST owner on this forum when your HST tractor starts to bog you have to let up as needed on the forward pedal. Again unless you have a feature like auto throttle like on the HST +.
I am done with this discussion.

HST transmissions have their strengths I have never said other wise. But in situations like I had with the land in question and logging and such a gear is better. This reminds me of I think his name in his is arrow. Everyone was telling him how much better a hydro was and for his needs mostly logging he felt the gear was better because he could pull the logs faster. With the exact same model tractor just one was gear the other was hydro.

I don't know enough about this to get too far off into the weeds, but I operate an HST and a geared tractor regularly. On an HST, I pick the right range, RPM and HST pedal position to direct the right amount of power and traction to go up hill of which we have plenty and the right range, gear, and RPM to direct the right amount of power and traction to go up the hill. Sometimes I may have to downshift if I am not familiar with the hills/load/traction and sometimes I have to let up, "change gearing" on the HST. I have driven both types for a lot of years and just don't get your whole point. I don't find it problematic to change gears OR let off the HST pedal to adjust to conditions and neither system will negate the need to do this under certain circumstances.

After all that, I still like gear drive better! :D :D :D

After all that, I still like HST better and I'm currently holding 4 of them to prove it! :D :D :D :D

Nothing wrong with that, given the choice I'll take an HST, but I will be using a geared one later this week when it dries up and won't be complaining.

I grew up driving tractors with no power steering, steel seat, so I am pretty much ahead of the game whatever modern tractor I'm on.

Pretty much how I feel.

I remember getting on that steel seat on a 25F day to clear snow! COLD ON THE BUM! Now I get on a nice warm padded seat, push one pedal to go forward, and the other pedal to go backwards. Easier than driving my truck! Philip.

Yep, we fed cattle with ours in the winter and plowed, disked, cultivated in the spring and summer and often just flipped it back and stood up.
