I'm not sure what the flexible connector you are referring to looks like. Another member of this forum, Oldmech, used a flexible connector as part of his solution to repower a Gravely L. So you might look at what he did and see if that's similar to what you are thinking.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the Lifan engine. There seems to be a consensus that Lifan makes a very good engine. I have never used one.

Two comment and a question:
Has anyone considered connecting an third-party engine to a Gravely L using a flexible coupling (like the one they once used on Craftsman table saws in lieu of a pulley-and-belt system or the one that was in the Erector set I had as a kid)? I'm thinking it would be easier to find compatible terminations for either end of the coupling than to do all the precise machine-shop work you guys are doing. Plus, if things aren't quite centered or lined up, properly, maybe a flexible coupling would be forgiving. There may be a thousand reasons why it wouldn't work, but if it will, how do you want me to make out the check?

Hi Guys
I finally got a gear done for the L model that I think will work.
I will use a top hat or bushing on the end like Gravely uses
on the late model.
I took a gear Martin S1015
and a 1 inch coupling bored the coupling out left about .002 small.
Pressed the gear hub into the coupling with a key all ready in coupling .
Welded them together.
Bored the gear end out so engine crank shaft can go all way through.
Also machined a pocket in the gear end for the top hat to fit.
Machined off to fit on the engine shaft length.
Now all I like is having it harden.
and make the top hat and have it harden.

This also shortened the length that the crank holds the gear out from the engine about 1 1/2 inches.
now I will only need 1 spacer adapter
More pictures :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I plan to make a top hat like the pilot bushing gravely makes for the late model gear.
As a matter fact the only difference will be the Outside dia.
of the large dia

Also here is the other mod.
I had talked about before .

I second that. This is good stuff - very creative! I'll be interested in seeing how a clone type engine fits on an L using this gear and adapter. As the space between the engine and tranny decreases, parts of the engine may start running into the handle bars. The muffler will hit first followed by the the gas tank. So some work arounds may be needed for these - but I'm sure Bruce will solve them.

I've not put one on a L yet but the bolts and handle bars hook at the same place up front.
So I think I can make it nearly like a 10 and later models.
