How does one cut off the fuel supply on a tractor? I thought shutting the key off would of done that.

In a normal situation my key cuts fuel flow. But there is a manual cut-off at the injector pump also.

Grasshopper, some machines have key-off-fuel solenoids, others have mechanical cable or lever operated fuel shutoff, including dump throttle models. All should have a valve on the tank outlet though, with some exceptions.

So is that what OP did you think, shut the fuel off at the injector pump. Next time I look at my tractor, I'l see if I can find that manual shut off.

Mine are on the dash. Most are pull buttons. On one the hand throttle has an extended stop position.

Permatex makes a nifty head gasket spray. I use it on both sides.

I would have reused it with coppercoat. It would not leak then. I haven't put a head gasket on without it after a co-worker at a car dealer told me about it. My buddy uses the $1/can aluminum color spray paint because he thinks coppercoat costs too much.

It's easy to think one could kill the air to a Diesel engine after it has flipped over but in the heat of the moment things are happening fast and finding the air intake or manual fuel shutoff can be a daunting task when you are upside down.

I think a quicker way to kill the engine would be simply to plug the exhaust system as most are accessible easier than the intake. A pair of gloves or any way to try to tightly plug the exhaust. If the system is tight enough it should work.

Maybe practice it a few times on your machine to see if you can stall the engine at full revs.

driveway, are the head bolts stretch bolts? How many times can you reuse them?

if it's laying on the side of the air cleaner and intake manifold, it may be difficult.

A large ball valve in the intake might be good for any diesels running around escaping fuel gas ( lp, methane, etc.. )

You would think that. And that's what i thought. But turning the key off did not work. Luckily, the L-48 has a manual fuel shut off on the filter head so you can turn the fuel off while changing the filter.

It's funny that all the things that have been done in the name of curb appeal and marketing, really screw you up in a case like this. Diesel's used to have a mechanical pull knob to shut off the fuel supply. But to make that more "friendly" and car like, they now have a keyswitch and solenoid, (which can fail).

And nobody wants to look at an ugly engine or have an ugly air cleaner sticking out, so everything is encased with plastic and totally inacessible in a hurry. Whether it be fire or something like this. I guess things can have unforesen costs. Plus, plastic burns really, realy good.

It turns out it was not the head gasket leaking. The antifreeze that i thought was coming out of the head gasket is actually leaking out of the dam exhaust studs. The threads go all through into the water jackets on the head. The new studs come a blue Teflon, or some type of sealant on them like a lot of the air fittings nowadays. I reused my old ones not realizing they would leak because they thread into the water chamber part of the head.

I don't think they are stretch bolts on the head, and she runs great. Just the dam leak. went down and got four new studs from kubota at $5 a stud for the four that was leaking.

Looking at the simplest explanation first, if you were pushing brush and a stick jammed against the injector pump throttle lever it's conceivable that it was that scenario which caused the runaway. I have used my B7500HSD a lot around heavy brush and tree branches and it seems I'm always hanging something underneath which causes problems. Luckily its never jammed the throttle wide open yet. I have had a stick jam underneath and cause the hydrostatic shift pedal to operate by itself. That was unnerving. Kubota needs to offer a skid plate to cover all the tender hoses and levers underneath their little tractors.

They still DO! Well, at least my Kubota B9200 does. Of course it's about 30 years old.
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments on how the manufacturers have "junked up" the newer tractors. It's sad I'm telling you.
I suppose, however, that people were saying the same thing 50 years ago. (Styled vs unstyled Farmalls and Deeres)
But the average shade tree mechanic could fix a 1950 year tractor.

My 67 Massey has that too. No key for it.

I would of never guessed that, have to buy $5.00 studs with the blue goop on them, $5X8 on a 4 cylinder sounds pricey, then if I did the job I'd get something wrong, have to take the $5.00 bolts back out, then go get more $5.00 bolts. Gezz lawezz I hope after 6 times I get it right, wonder if thread locker would of worked?

Why are you rebuying studs? Just buy a tube or jar of gasoila or similar thread prep.

Never heard of gasoila before, rated up to 600 degrees, sounds enough to me. At about $5-6.00/2oz tube it would be cheaper for me then buying bolts 6 times on a good day.

I've put alot of studs in heads.. That or a similar product has yet to give me a leak at threads. Head studs or bolts, manifolds, misc mounting studs, etc.

Remember, in a water area, it shouldn't be seeing more than about 280' max, barring cooling system failure.
