Thanks for posting those brake pictures. That is one thing I've never messed with on mine.

You are doing a great job! Keep it up and this machine will give you many years of service.

Thanks sld, lots more to do for sure.

Did some front end work today also. See anything wrong with this steering rod?

image.jpeg

How about now?

image.jpeg

Got it mostly straight, good enough for Gov't work.

image.jpeg

Also needed new ball joint boots.

image.jpeg

I reinstalled the metal rings, they were pretty rough but will work for another 30 yrs.

image.jpeg

Replaced the boots on the drag link too.

image.jpeg

Tomorrow the axle comes out as well as the left spindle.

Some work on the front axle today.

Removed the axle to replace the bushings.

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

A side by side of the old and new bushings. Since I don't have a press, I had to collapse the bushing on itself with a chisel and screw driver. Was then able to drive it out from the other side.

image.jpeg

The new bushings installed. They don't seem as robust as the old ones.

image.jpeg

I was going to replace the left side spindle bushings too as there was some play (1/8-1/4 inch) in the spindle. After inspecting the bushings though there was no discernible wear that I could see, so I left them alone.

Also started on the water pump.

The first bolt I tried to remove broke off in the head...great!

image.jpeg

Pulled the hoses off and found lots of corrosion around the neck of the bottom hose barb.

image.jpeg

After breaking the first bolt off the rest came out with no problem.

After lunch the new t-stat and pump go in.

The metal hydrolic screen could just be cleaned and replaced. My old 1700 would clog once a year had to drain and clean it.

Got the water pump installed. Here is the old and new side by side. Also replaced the thermostat while in there.

image.jpeg

Since these engines are prone to cracking heads if they overheat I decided to install a temp gauge. Will also be doing oil press, and volt meter.

image.jpeg

All done and buttoned up. I was lucky and was able to get some vice grips on the broken bolt. Used lots of ant seize on the bolts going back in.

Keep the cooling system up to par and it'll never overheat. I've working the crap out of mine and never overheated it.

Wow! You have accomplished an amazing amount of progress in 20 days, doing it for the first time, and OUTSIDE !! Please keep up the pics and posts. VERY cool. Please don't think of me being rude for asking but what did you have to pay for it? What is your prospected final dollar amount? Any idea of the hours on it? Lastly, WHY did the let it set for 16 years???
The only difference in on-road and off-road fuel is the no tax price. (And the cute color.) So that is a great advantage for us.

Thanks Fido, it's been a lot of work, but I enjoy tinkering around on old equipment. I'm not sure on the total dollar amount yet. I hate to look until everything is done. I paid $1100 for the tractor and woods finishing mower, plus he delivered it. Not sure why it sat really. I bought it from an estate sale. The Son told me they had a deal with the town mowing grass for some of the historic state owned properties in the area. When the Mom passed away the Dad let the business go and parked the tractor. Their property was only an acre or two, so no need for a big tractor like this.

Got lots of cleaning and painting done today. All wiped down with mineral spirits, acetone, and primed.

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

All painted up with two coats.

Also received my new rim from Kentucky tractor salvage. They shipped with the tire attached still, and it's loaded with fluid. So now my dilemma is whether to dismount this tire and install the new one I bought, or just leave it installed and paint the rim. Here is a shot of the tire, the tread is like brand new.

image.jpeg

The tread pattern matches the tires I already bought almost exactly.

image.jpeg

So what should I do here fellas? Change tire or leave it installed. It does have fluid in it which is nice.

If it holds air, use it for a spare. If you have 2 new ones you might as well use them.
