Pretty much decided on a 2015 International DT 4400 with the Navistar Max 9 engine and Allison 3000 transmission with a crew cab. I was surprised that the quotes from the two local dealers were within $100 of each other. I'm meeting with the second sales guy on Sunday. He seems to be more willing to work around my F450 that I'm upside down in.

Looking forward to being confident in a truck again. It's a lot of money but should double or triple the life I'm getting out of a truck now. I need to get it ordered since it will 6-8 weeks for it to be built.

Is the Cummins available yet in the 4400 or is that only in in class 8 trucks?

I think the Cummins is available in 300 hp the Navistar is 330 hp I think both are 950 ft/lbs.

I think I would look into the Cummins option even though they claim to have the bugs worked out of the MaxxForce. Guessing that resale value will be higher on an identical truck with a Cummins.

Sounds like one sweet truck. The local IH dealer had a 4 door cab chassis truck that was a low profile that looked real nice it had all the toys. I have heard nothing but good things about those.

I had to look it up to see what it was. My ignorance. Question, I know torque does the work, and decently familiar with diesel's (my truck is an '06 GMC Duramax/Allison) and I also know even GM runs my same engine in medium duty trucks derated (300hp vs 360 in mine), but not sure why? Does it increase longevity of the engine? What displacement are the engines in this truck? Trying to get a better grip on how the heavy duty trucks fun their engines.

They don't show a Cummins available in the 4400, but they do in the 4300. They don't show a Cummins between the ISB6.7 and ISX15 available in their lineup, so nothing near the size of the 9.

Can't wait to see it!

Spent an hour and a half with the salesman this morning going over details making sure we had everything I wanted/needed. Start dealing with the finance guy tomorrow. The salesman came to where I was working and he and his counterpart will likely meet me at another job later this week to make sure the frame height is going to match my gooseneck height and that the low-profile spec is going to be low enough with the 22.5" tire and wheel package we picked, or if I'll need to go to the 19.5's. I'm pretty excited, I've never bought a built to order truck before.

Congrats Brian, hopefully the truck will serve you well for many years. Post pictures when you get the truck!

Brian,

glad to see that your stepping up to a real truck. I have heard the 4300/4400's are not as well built as the older 4700/4900's but I have nothing to base that on. You will be more than happy though. I went from a 3500 ram to a 4700 Crew Cab with a DT530E and a MD3060 allison and I would never go back for hauling large loads. the only thing I really miss is the 4wd! IMG-20130302-00080.jpg

Yeah I really wanted to do 4wd with this truck, but it cut the capacity of the truck down too much to make it worthwhile.

I'm not sure if I can imagine what the step up is going to be like. I thought it was night and day going from my GMC K3500 into my F450. This step ought to be more like a leap.

Well, all I can say about the f450 is that my truck dwarfs them. I know it will out maneuver a crew cab dually as well. It handles a 6 horse GN with ease. If you know anything about horse trailer, they are extremely tongue heavy due to the axles being located so far back. Its so much different driving as well, your not reclined in it at all, the airride captains chairs really take the fatigue out of driving although the truck is alot louder than the newer vehicles. Then again its 14 years old and has 100k on it.

In 8 or so weeks. It's built to order so I won't have it for a little while. It hasn't actually been ordered yet, still working out the financing.

What do you haul?

I pull a 28' gooseneck trailer that contains my mobile shop for doing onsite equipment repair. (Utility tractors, construction equipment, etc.) It weighs about 17,000 lbs.

Cool

I've got a buddy that does the same. He got rid of his full size service truck about 1.5 years ago and went to an F450 and couldn't be happier. Hopefully you will be happy jumping to a larger truck

The F450 was definitely an improvement over my 1-ton, but still not enough truck for daily use. Not sure if it is still a chassis size problem, the fragile nature of the 6.4, or the amount of miles, but I'm not willing to experiment any more. Moving to a true medium-duty truck should eliminate my problems and leave me with some equity at the end of my loan instead of a bucket of bolts.

I've worked out of service bodied trucks and hated it. I never seemed to have the right tool. Having spent many weekends at the dragstrip working out of a trailer it was an easy transition. I love the extra amenities that having a trailer allows, like my full sized toolbox, solvent tank, hydraulic press, and drill press, things you just don't get with a service truck.

Did you ever find out if the 22.5's will work or if you'll have to go with the 19.5's? If so will you respec the rear gear?
