I got a few suggestions... Noisy, loud, obnoxious, chatterbox, No? Don't like those names, :confused3: okay, I tried
I concur. Those six guineas I took a pic of in my back lawn have now taken up residence in the woods behind the barn.
What a racket! Squawk squawk squawk squawk, repeat a thousand times
they must have some Olympic sized vocal cords, made with Kevlar apparently
Nice to be home. Left early in the dark, decided not to take a chance on the coastal route, Route 17 which apparently goes from Savannah to Portsmouth. And right through my little city of ten thousand. So, back on route 95, and again a nice ride, much more traffic today, lots of motorhomes headed somewhere and clearly the weekend was already starting for many travelers. But 95 wasn't bad, lots of police which was good, ticketing away, including some dufus who tried to turn around in the middle of the road, you know, where the police sit with radar aimed one way or the other. With the really big sign saying not to use, official business only.
Perhaps that did not translate well to some foreign language. I saw the state trooper waving his arms at bit at the occupants so seemed to be having some communication issues... Well, if that driver was licensed, he now has a ticket to pay.
Pretty hot out here, about 90 and a little sticky, the lawn is ok, can slide for a day or two, load of dirty wash in, and I'm just going to chill out.
Charleston is a lovely city; I actually didn't get downtown this time but saw a lot of the barrier islands, which I hadn't before. Kiawah is on the South side of Charleston, Wild Dunes and a few others are on the North side. The whole place looks like a good storm would clear it down to a flat beach. The front half of the resort had to be fully rebuilt after the last hurricane hit there.
got out into the ocean today for a swim, funny, or maybe not so funny....not too many people out beyond waist level. All kinds of folks chomped by sharks on this coast and I think it shows. Not like the Jersey shore as a kid where one could swim far out, until the lifeguard finally had enough and blew his whistle. Always was a decent swimmer, much less so now with my arthritis issues. But it sure felt good, way too warm, no zip at all, and high tide this time instead of low, so relatively shallow water goes out for a ways. one hour on the beach was enough for me, read my kindle, sadly nothing
exceptional to look at...
I'm not convinced about the boat I saw. Didn't fall in love...very nice boat, fancy inside, but while the lower helm was seriously cool, the rest of the boat was just ok and didn't seem efficiently laid out. To get to the engines, one goes down a hatch in the cockpit, crawls through an opening with two big aluminum fuel tanks on each side and then you pop out into another room where the engines are. Bent over of course. The fuel filters for the engines were remote located to the rear, which is good, but in places where only midgets or contortionists could access. Fuel filters that clog while out in the ocean have to be able to be changed very easily and that was sure not the case here. Sure, I could move them, but the list just went on. All the marine electronics and the tvs/stereos were original 15 year old units, vcrs, tube tvs, etc, looked very dated. I don't think he used them.
But the biggest issue was a safety one. The walk forward on each side was not easy at all, the width to squeeze by hanging on to various handles was very narrow, and easy to trip on. My older Bertram was much easier to get around. I think I'm going to rethink looking at an older Grand Banks, Defever, Albin or similar trawlers. Modern boats have put such a priority on inside roominess and taking the living room with you that outside ergonomics are really affected. The narrower that walkway, the bigger the salon below... It wasn't that I couldn't get around, but my friends, my age, are going to be my crew at times, and would I want my dear old friends trying to get forward to the anchor if the boat was rocking?... Sure, if the path was safe. But it didn't feel so on this boat.
Enough about boats, it's all a compromise somewhere.
Tomorrow I need to work out near the roadside. Some of the huge vines I had cut are falling down out of the trees above, vines 2 inches thick and larger. Definitely something to do in the cool of the morning.
