Help! L3200 length vs trailer length

Beside the length of the trailer, carefully consider the weight rating. Do not guess about how much your tractor will weight. Find out for sure how much the loader and backhoe weigh add in the weight of the compactor and tamper then multiply by at least 110%. I think you would be best suited with a 10k trailer. If you are towing this equipment around for work and get inspected/weighed by the DOT and are 1 pound over the trailer's tire weight rating you will be placed out of service.

Ok,
I went to the local Car-Mate dealer. He has a 18' (15'+3') beavertail car hauler rated at #7000 GVWR he sait I could haul up to #5050 on the trailer. My best guess is the tractor, hoe and loader would weigh 4400-4500 lbs. I might haul a plate compactor and upright tamper at the same time. $3166.00 OTD
What do you think?

No way

A 10k gvw is pretty much a 'standard'. You don't want to tow right on the edge of the weight ratings. You need a little buffer. I'm in the most expensive part of the country and an 18' 10k gvw trailer brand new is $4000. Seen plenty of really nice used ones in the $2500-$3000 range. You can get one rated for 8k gvw but it really doesnt save you any money.

You'll be much better off in the long run if you buy the right fit instead of one that just barely gets buy. It'll not only be safer, but way easier for you. The bigger trailer will no doubt last much longer, be better built and will handle the load much better.

One big advantage to a shorter trailer is if you have limited maneuvering room. The street in front of my Virginia residence is a cul-de-sac and so narrow that the trailer spans the entire street when crosswise. With a car almost always parked on the side opposite my driveway I can't maneuver my F350 and trailer to back the trailer into my driveway. The people down at the end of the cul-de-sac have full sized Expeditions and Maxi-vans parked nose to the curb. I have to do a 3 point turn in our civic. IF I get all of them to clear out their vehicles I can turn the trailer. I always use my B7610. Drop the trailer in front and easily back it in. THe difference between an 8' tow vehicle and a 20' makes it all happen.

Around here the dealers sell the L3200 & 3800 with 16' trailers in package deals. I bought a 7K dual axle 16 footer and my L3800w/loader fits fine, but I have no hoe. I also have no need to haul my tractors on the road, so the trailer is used for other stuff...

18 foot 10k car haul would be fine and they go for $3k here.

I use a 16ft trailer to tow a L2800. With the loader and box blade it is a perfect fit, but with the mower the loader must come off or be set on the tongue to get the mower under the 4ft overhang limit. Even then I have to secure the pivot wheel forward and flag it. Having said that, I personally would not get anything under 20ft. Only the very limited amount that I move the tractor with the mower and having a 24ft enclosed car hauler keeps me from trading the trailer I have.

The hoe obviously makes a big difference in length and weight distribution...

Just remember the dealer isn't hauling it. You are.

Last year a member had a dealer (large well known dealer) sell a trailer grossly under rated for his tractor, in a package deal, (he was new and didn't know better) ... He had to fight with them and threaten legal action.... They eventually took back the under rated one and sell him an appropriate rated trailer.

Just because its from a dealer, doesn't mean its always right!

Thanks, you all have very valid points. I was also not thinking about the additional weight of loaded tires. The dealer can order a #9900 18' or 20' treated deck car hauler for me (3 Wks.), I guess it is better to wait and get the best fit. I still would like to not to go over 18' due to tight work sites and narrow city streets. Do you think with 18' I will get good weight distribution? Having the tractor backed on might be best?
With the car hauler having no side rails (only front) it would also work better for side loading building materials.

3-4 large dealers around here are selling 16' trailers with this size rig, but no hoe. Yes, the hoe will make a difference. Yes 16 foot is marginal...

If I had to haul mine much with the hog on it, I'd want 18 or 20 foot. If I ever need to haul mine back to the dealer, I'll use the 16' I have.
