The Johnson grass was here when I bought the land and not surprisingly it痴 spreading. I didn稚 want to do an all over spray since there is great red clover and orchard grass everywhere else. So today I hooked up the wick applicator I bought online, loaded it with glycophosphate and water 1-1 and started wiping weeds. I値l know how effective it was in about a week. Guess we値l see.

That is interesting. Please give us a pic of the result and your evaluation. I've never tried that set up.
Cheers,
Mike

I've got one of those and the farmer I bought it from swore by it. Guess I never got the hang of it. so I walked it all down with a 4 gal. sprayer.

But do have about 1/4 acre of it left. So here is my plan: using the Pat's hitch will use the two hitch points to hold the pvc and then able to lower the wicks closer to the root and crawl through the grass slowly. Hopefully give them a good soaking.
May not have gone slow enough the first few times I tried.
By all means let us know how the kill rate works for you.
I need the encouragement...!

Looking at your pics a bit closer noticed you used the same large hose clamps I did. Now I'm thinking the secret is to prevent the pvc pipe from rolling with the grass and reducing the contact patch between the grass and the wicks.
So now will have to find a way to secure the pipe to the rear hitch points and prevent it from rolling.

Used properly, they work great.
Once the ropes are saturated, keep the wicks just above the desirable vegetation.
Proceed at an average walking pace. (Roughly 5 mph).

Post results please. Thanks.

After a closer look and some thinking.
The one we had, about 40 years ago, was on an M Farmall Front mounted with a cylinder to raise and lower.
It was 12' wide. That made watching the height much easier as i moved across the cotton fields.
Possibly had a bit stronger product back then. Round-up was fairly new on the market.

I don't know what Johnson grass is..but if it's anything like bent grass that we have here, it sucks.. I just bombed my yard with Tenasity about a month ago, and touched up a few spots that I missed the first go around, it's it's almost all wiped out ..another hit or two in the spring and my lawn should be spectacular

In the old days, the farmer would turn the hogs in on the Johnson grass, providing it was fenced. They will root the stuff out, roots and all, and kill it completely out.

Tom, I started my lawn rehab 2 weeks ago. I have lots of weeds and crabgrass. I fertilized to make the grass strong, plug aerated, and reseeded. I will use a weed & Feed in the spring.

If you have not seen the herbicide Tenacity yet.... look it up on YouTube ...kills crabgrass post and pre emergent..without killing new grass or seed... stuff is magic...

Rumor that I heard is that the guy was named Johnson and he brought it back from Turkey, where it comes from. He thought it would be a great idea to have a super fast growing, super large grass, to feed livestock. Sadly, it spreads and takes over so quickly that it's highly invasive and impossible to keep under control. I've been spraying each "bunch" of it with round up with poor results. It just takes so much time to keep up on it.

I hope this works because I'll probably copy it!!!!

I’ll definitely let you all know. My speed was well under 5 mph, probably closer to 2 mph. I wanted it on pretty good. I could see the dampness on the leaves as I drove, not saturated, but at the concentration I used, it didn’t need to be soaked.

Honestly if I get 80% of it the first time I’ll be happy.

Btw, the tall stuff is Johnson grass. The orchard grass in front of it is about 4 feet tall.

I use Eraser with a tad of Remedy to get those huisache sprig regrowths.
The johnson grass appears to literally melt after about four days.

I will trade your johnson grass for my foxtail. Talk about a bad grass. It's difficult to kill because it comes up in my other grass. So to spray it with round up, you kill all other stuff as well

I have been in contact with the local US dept of AG people, and they tell me this foxtail is very bad problem around the state.
They say the issue they are having is trying to come up with a chemical that's able to kill a grass within a grass without killing surrounding grasses
It also has to be a chemical that you still graze livestock and harvest hay for livestock

I meant to say, in my last post, that I have read about Tenasity and checked it out. I have hundreds of blueberry bushes and liquids would harm the plants.

I believe it comes in a granular now as well.

Ive got johnson grass taking over parts of my field.

The state sprays it along the road every year, it keeps coming back.
