You can also get dinged for NOT thinking a woman is pregnant. A pregnant woman got angry at a woman I was dating, because she was surprised to learn that the woman was pregnant. She replied sarcastically, "Did you think I was just getting fatter?"

In reality, the woman was so fat already that a baby didn't cause a noticeable difference in her appearance. It probably wouldn't have helped to explain that, though.

You can also get dinged for GETTING a woman pregnant!

One of the best jobs I ever had was waitering at a nice place that also did banquets (guaranteed 15% on top the bill) in college.

You don't call a woman "ma'am", you call a woman "Miss". "Ma'am" may imply respect, but it also impies age. Being a waiter, you not only have to give good service (keeping glasses filled on numerous tables can be harder than you think when it comes to multi tasking), you also have to get people to like you.

I remember the time I was a waiter and I prided myself in giving amazing service. My proof was always having more tips at the end of the night than all the other service people.

One day I had a table of 6 people who were VERY demanding, which never bothered me and I as usual gave them the best I had. After they left there was zero tip on the table - they stiffed me. Sure I've been stiffed in the past but this one hurt because of the amount of "extra" service" they demanded.

Well, well, well, the very next day they came back and guess who was their waiter again.........I'll let your imagination go wild here as to how that meal and service worked out.

I believe it was Senator Barbara Boxer that ripped a high ranking military officer for calling her Ma'am during one of the political debacles. She claimed she had worked so hard for the title Senator. Pretty typical lunacy on her part.

I don't remember ever being stiffed, but I will always remember we would have to draw straws for some bunch of real old guys always got dressed up and wore some kind of funky red hat that would would always order the "base cheese" platter and draft cheap beer for like $400 and get a room from like 6 to midnight. Guys never tipped, and if you got $30 by leaving at 1AM, you'd be lucky.

When I was in a service oriented job in the mid 70's the company I worked for required all of the employees to listen to a tape called "The Boss". They sent a tape recorder from store to store with an explanation of how the boss is the customer. Everyone who works with the public should hear that tape.

In the 70s the fraction of customers that were self entitled obnoxious fools was much smaller.
They are not all right all the time. Some are better off being somebody elses customer.

I once had enough of my worst complaining customer. I used to cringe when I saw his number on caller I.D. I told him that maybe he would be happier if he went elsewhere. He changed his tune (for a little while, anyway) after that. It's not really right that the Aholes get things cheaper and the nice people pay full pop.

I've been on both sides of this. I worked in my Mom's retail shop to help her out. We got all types. It was an eye opener for a 16 year old. My first real job, I worked for a water well outfit, sometimes doing service calls with another more experienced guy. My first day, we got 2 tips and the other guy was burnt about it. He'd been there 20 years and never got a tip. I tried not to say anything about his attitude at the time.
Fast forward 30 years, and I often wonder if I've gotten more like that guy, both as an employee, and as a customer.
When are we having meetings about our attitudes ?

Wait until you get into your 60,s.LOL...I find myself less tolerant of rude people the older I get.

On a different note...next time you get good service at a restaurant, make it a point to compliment and thank the staff...including an appropriate tip. You might be surprised at the responses you get. I concluded that compliments are few and far between in that business. My daughter used to wait tables, and rude and unappreciative customers are not unusual. Seems some folks like to display their superiority over folks just trying to make a living.

I'm NEVER rude to a waitress! I don't enjoy the taste of hair and bodily fluids in my soup.
