I'm not sure I understand this one...if you have a FEL, use it as a counterbalance (good idea to use the FEL in the brush anyway).
I ran my 600# cutter (5' Land Pride) with no front weights on a Deere 670. Now I only had the cutter in transport height when I was on hard pavement. In the brush or crossing the lawn, I just raised the 3PH enough to keep the front of the cutter from digging in. The tail wheel was on the ground.
But if you do need front weights, 5 of the 42 lb weights should be quite sufficient for a 460 lb cutter.

Thanks for the advice. I want to use the cutter without the FEL to clear out some brush in the woods. WIthout the FEL there's just less to keep an eye on. It's been pretty wet around here and I haven't had much opportunity to use the cutter yet. Now that the real summer weather is here (dry and hot) I can get out and get the cutter set to the tractor. Keeping the tail wheel on the ground should be enough.

I have a heavier cutter (about 800 pounds) and I have 6 of the 42 pound weights on the front. The hood guard for the FEL will allow more weights than the OEM guard so you can put 6 of these weights on, and I'd advise putting all 6 on there. You'll need to get a longer rod than usual (i.e. as compared to the standard rod to use with the regular weight mount that comes on the tradtor) to hold them in place, but JD makes one that you can use. You'll feel a whole lot more secure with the extra weight on the front.

I agree with Roy and hared. Even though the JD brand weighs are pricey, they look good and are a good investment. Buy as many as your front bumper will hold. The FEL is great counterweight in places where close quarters are not a concern, and it can detect things you may not want to drive over, in time for you to stop and check it out.

The standard 790 weight bracket holds five 42 pound weights. I run this way with my 513 cutter which may weigh a bit less than yours but it's fine. You can add weight bracket extensions but I'd try it with just five and see how it works.
The JD weights are expensive but they are a snap to add/remove. I like mowing without the FEL, it bounces too much in my rough fields. I can take the FEL off and add the weights in less than five minutes. Same for the reverse.

"Are there any problems with the extra weight on the front wheel drive mechanics?"
There has been some conjecture that leaving the loader on constantly will cause excessive wear on the front axle components.
Of course, you read about older Deere models such as the x55 series, x70 series that have had the loader mounted and used extensively in the landscaping or construction businesses with no ill results.
Personally, I leave my loader off most of the time since my usage is mostly mowing. But that's for increased stability on slopes and less weight on the finished lawn...nothing to do with wear on the front end.
