Yea I think rental equipment is the way to go if you dare venture into that part of town. No we don't build trailers, but If you got it in the Jay/Farmington area that's not far from the house. We build buildings, great big buildings. One Lincoln Street, Millenium Place, The hotel at the Boston Conventon Center, and most of the big buildings that have gone up in the past 10 years down by the convention center. I am the outside field rep I spend most of my time down your neck of the woods. :)
Sounds like a great lifestyle... make your sales & money here but get to live and work up there! I like it! :D

Afternoon Doug, Heck you wont even have to have the tires loaded with all that 1" plate ballast ! ;) :)
Yeah, 'cept it will overload my already-marginal 10K equipment trailer!!! :(

Not really. I leave the house on Monday morning and do not return until Friday afternoon. Been doing it for 10 or so years now and it is getting old. This time of year is really bad for me. You get to go to your house at night after work and do those things that need to be done. The days are long and there is enough light to get into some of those serious projects.
Me on the other hand I get out of work at 3:30 and go to the hotel for the night.

Oh Lordy!!! That ain't so good... unless, of course, it's a top Boston hotel and you get a staggering per diem! :D

I too lived in hotels for years. Sometimes I wonder how I ever did all that travel. At least you avoid the hideous air travel thing... airports aren't exactly much fun anymore... or do you???

Well you are sorta wrong on both accounts. They pay for the hotels and the ones they pay for ain't the expensive ones. One good thing is I get to keep the points. :D :D

As far as flying I haven't done much this year but i have done a bit of time in Buffalo and several other jobs that a flight twice weekly was required. Got to keep the miles too. :D :D

Per diem is nothing to make money on but I don'tgo hungry.

Other that that not a bad gig, pays the bills and I get to move around alot.Just finishing up a job in Hartford, CT. Seems like I have been in CT for over a year now. Wait I have been here over a year now between two jobs. I will be heading back up to MA in September to do a couple of buildings at Foxboro:eek:

Oh brother... let me guess: Mister Kraft's new Patriot Place development... yes?

Well you got one right. Yea Krafties little development he is doing. I haven't been down there in a while. People tell me that it is turning into quite the little strip mall. We are doing three buildings. One will eventually have a hotel on top of it. We are hoping we get the contract for that too.

Had to turn down my first inquiry of the day without even looking at the jobsite due to security issues. Carting it back home each night is not an option given the distance.

Dougster

I don't understand the distance issue. Added fuel costs ???

Fuel yes... but mainly time. This is not an easy place to get in, do your work and get out the same day while keeping your sanity. I have enough problems doing that with local jobs... let alone inner city jobs!

Mama Mia! Krafty gets richer yet again! Do you suppose there's any work for a senile old engineer-turned-ditch-digger over there??? :D

Guess I'm being a little thick-headed. It doesn't take me much additional time to load up and take everything home at night, especially while I'm still "on their clock :)". In our area, vandalism is a bigger issue than outright theft. If everything is lockable (oil, fuel, hydro, etc.) and outriggers, it's almost safe to leave it in the yard while you go to lunch :(

There's an excavation company working in Haverhill (doing some sewer / drainage work) for the last couple summers. He has metal plates that he puts over the cab of his equipment. I'll have to take a pic sometime. They are hinged somehow. He's working in the nice part too (Bradford) not "downtown".

If you need the work, price it with the extra hauling. No sense getting your tractor vandalized or stolen.

That's certainly my normal method of operation... but I often find myself loading up at the jobsite and unloading at home in pitch darkness. You must be much faster than me! :)

And that's the key issue... nothing on my machine is currently lockable. Even the ignition key is a bad joke.

You know Boston... and that part of Boston that keeps setting records for most people killed in the streets. Would you take a couple day backhoe assignment in there???
