Curious about your mower. I dont know the specific about my Woods mower without going out and looking at it but its heavy duty 72in also and about 18 years old. I bought it used and ran it on my 35hp Kioti and it ran it just fine. Couldnt find a good used 5fter so bought this one. Mowed 5 acres that hadnt been touched in a couple years, 6ft tall in most place (mostly brushy weeds), and I never felt like I needed more power.
I actually have been looking for an 8ft dual spindle or 12ft bat wing for my new
L6060 I have on order. Its been dry when I mowed and I dont win any speed records but I actually thought that 6ft was perfectly sized to the 35hp Kioti. Im guessing you are probably mowing a lot more thick heavy grasses? Not challenging your statement, just making sure I dont sell this one and buy a bigger one And end up unhappy with it.
Indeed, I do, DB.
In the event that you may not know, heavy grass mows MUCH harder than does tall weeds, and I haven't cleared any ground for 25+ years. As a result, much of my ground is heavy grass.
Yes, my BB720X is properly set up and, unlike most, I keep the blades sharp, much like a lawn mower, nor is there anything wrong with my
L6060, but I am routinely HP limited in some areas, both steep and flat.
I try to mow as quickly as my mowers will clear properly, which is why I use premium quality mowers with adequate grass clearance, but doing so with my BB720X, even with sharp blades, would require 10-15 more PTO HP than my
L6060 produces in some of my conditions.
That said, there are folks that pull 8' twin spindle cutters or 12' BW cutters with an
L6060 so I would not want to discourage you if your conditions are different.
FWIW: In some of my conditions, I found myself gearing down below high range/1st gear to low range 6th (or even 5th) gear with my 90 PTO HP M9960 and Woods BB740X mounted 7' cutter (since sold) when operating in EPTO. Haven't found the need to gear down with my Woods BW 15.50 15' BW cutter on the 9960, but have made no attempts to operate it in EPTO or in high range.
