I have an L45 and the only trick I found to the auto throttle is to use the hand throttle to set a "minimum" rpm that gets the loader moving at a good rate. Then let the auto throttle take over from there as the ground speed increases.
My L45 is a chore to switch ranges on also. 2/4WD is changed easily pushing the clutch in and moving the lever while rolling slow. Luckily I rarely change range. M seems to work well for me. Full loaded climbing my pretty steep driveway I just touch the little orange stick down to "Turtle".
