MF1540 or MF431

Do you think the 1540 is capable of pulling the type of mower needed to cut hay? It was mentioned earlier that factory remotes are available; is that all that's needed for this type mower?

The type of mower that has been talked about, I believe just needs one remote. You will need two before everything is done or everyone else does. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I think that it would do just fine with a drum mower. I don't know about the other types on this tractor. I have a 1440 but have never mowed hay with it. spb1971 might know how a 1540 would handle a mower.

I would suggest you either go with the 431 or if you like the style of the 1540, move up to the 1547. I think the 1540 would handle it to a point but if you were to get into heavy conditions you really need more HP.

I'll also add to JerryG's wise suggestion to definitely go with 4WD (or MFWD). I have three tractors, ranging from 28 - 73 hp, and the two with 2-wheel drive only are relegated to light chores, like raking...and ....raking, and occasionally..raking.

Even bushhogging or cutting hay and especially plowing, 4wd is such a necessity. And I should add - in my experience, a 4wd will pull as much as a 2wd tractor with 25% more hp than the 4wd (weight being similar - let's not talk about those 20 ton avery's and rumely's). Not to mention the impact the front wheel drive has on FEL work...

oh and for many balers out there now (4X5 and larger), you need a good 60 pto hp to run 'em efficiently..

I think I'll go with the 1540, 1525 loader, auxiliary hydraulics. I'd love to go with the 1547 but size restrictions and budget won't allow it. Later on I'll look at a mower and rake it can handle, and leave the baling to someone else.

If you ever plan on doing any square baling with the tractor, get the 431. The plunger action on the square baler will rock the 1540 back and forth and that would be uncomfortable for the operator. The 431 has enough mass it won't make any difference.

Here it is leaving my pasture on it's way back to the dealer; never got it off the trailer. It had a hydraulic leak where the loader lines connect. I guess I'll try it out Monday.

Bigger picture!

Sorry to hear about the leak, you would think they would check ALL that over. Just like what happen to me, get the tractor and the guy wanted to show me how the mower worked, well no shear pin... I guess the other guys played a joke on the guy that delivered my tractor and took the bolt out, it was funning to see the guys face when nothing happen when he hit the PTO.

Is your loader bucket on backwards? I have never seen anyone haul with a loader like that.
