Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Well that's not bad, I see folks today spending $10K on new 24" rims and wheels, sometimes more and they still look like, well, nevermind. Yours would look good though. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Hmm, Glenn paid 239$ ea for the 108's and 405$ ea for the smaller XM27's.

It looks like it may be a while before we get an L5030 after all, but I'll keep up with the fitment info.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

We have some Canadian pricing now, this is is Canadian $ ok:

Firestone Radial 4000R1-W 280-70-R16 309$ ea
Michellin XM108 11x16 (320/65/R16) 328$ ea
Goodyear DT810 280x70x16 420$ ea

Edit
The XM27's are an industrial tire while the XM108's are an ag tire. The pricing is much lower on the ag's than the industrials but you give up the heavier case for better ride. The 11x16 XM27 fronts are almost 100$ more here in Canada than the 108's.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Ken, they should last you a very, very long time. With better traction, better tread contact and even lower pressure, I would think you would also loose less rubber. The XM27's are called R4's although I am not sure why when you look at the tread configuration, it looks more R1 then R4 whereas I think it is the XM 28 that is the more typical R4 looking tread. I will try to destroy my rear tires so that I can someday replace them with some XM27 17.5X24's

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Rat, the reason for the R-4 status is the casing is bullet proof, built like a brick @#$%house. The ag tires don't have as thick of casing and sidewall.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

That's the main reason I have R4's on my L3830. I wanted to ride on a brick @#$%house. It was important not to spring any leaks if you know what I mean.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

I've got a Kubota L3430 with FEL and the R1's. The front tires seem so undersized and really sink in with a full bucket. Glenn's work really impressed me. I've read the full thread but have not been able to determine the rims he used for his L3430, also if the pics of the loader mod were for the L3430. Is there any spreadsheet info that may help me speed up the process for getting the tire/rim matchup and the front/back ratio.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Tinytractors, that actually is another reason I went R4's. The R1's get lost very quickly under a load. No question that the R4's stay on top much better. That is perhaps one of the reasons though that in the mud, the traction is also so much less besides the tread design. I typicaly don't work in the mud if I can avoid it, it makes a stinkin mess of everything. For me, the R4's work very well, my soil is primarily DG (decomposed granite). It shines the steel on my loader/boxscraper very nicely.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

tinytractors, if you read close you'll see the rims from the L5030 ag tire option are your best bets. 90$ a piece was posted earlier as a recent price.

If you download the spreadsheet you should be able to find something. I haven't looked at what matches the stock rear R-1's.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

I took another look at the spreadsheet... a lot of info there. I guess the next step is to get the ratio between front and rear right and then start picking the path to go. Thank You.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Ok, there is a little trouble with getting tires from Michellin. A deptartment of transportation in North America bought out the entire years worth of production in the 11x16 radial XM27.

In Canada the XM 108's are not listed as available from most of the sellers.

I found 4 11x16's at a tire reseller who is off the system but they have theirs priced to sell to the government.

The story on the DOT tires is they bought 2wd backhoes and spec'd radial tires, the only radial available for the fronts is the Michellin drive tire so there are all these 2wd backhoses with drive tires rolling around. Governments are so smart sometimes.

Re: Picking up Glenn\'s Work - R1W Tires Grand L\'s

Ok I met with the local Michellin Ag rep at the farm show on the weekend. He says the tires are available and production has resumed.

I be calling the dealer with the numbers again. This is why I like the internet, when local stores can't seem to do their job right.

The listed XM 108 tire is actually a 320/65. For michellin this is the equivalent to the 11x16.

Update, thanks to CT_Treeguy we have confirmation the R1W's work on the front of L5030 tractors.

I'll try to update again later.

Another R1W thread:

A newer R1W thread

Note that the last post was to really say that the R1W's Glenn used fit the L5030 without trimming.

Hey! Welcome back stranger!

Don

Well, thanks, Don.

Stranger indeed. Six years ago I took delivery of my third tractor ... a customized Kubota L3430 ... promised to write up all my research on the secret and sacred radial R1W tire, and then I plum disappeared. Not only from here.

Can't really figure out where I am. This site has kudzu-ed.

Holy SmokeGlen, I can't believe your back. I thought the swamp had gotten the best of you. HaHa You have got to tell us how those tires have worked out.

Hello Glenn! I'm the one who probably quite inappropriately looked up your home number and called you about 4 years ago about the R1W's. Glad to see you're back! Another member CT_Treedude put some R1W's on his L5030 and had great luck with them, I never did get any on mine.

I still have my L5030HSTC, its now 13 years old with a little shy of 2500 hours on it. It wore out the 4th set of front tires so I finally tracked down a wider tire for it.
Tire - R1 31x15.50 R15 (33x12.50 R15 would also work) - These are used on trenchers and manlifts, cost about 200$ each.
Rim - L6060 ballon turf 15" rims - used with bald tires, 90$ for the pair.

Fits perfect, no rubbing on an L5030 throughout all axle positions. Much better floatation and finally no more R4 tread.

The rears have about 1000 more hours in them but I have a set of R1W's coming off my other tractor to slap on.
