Keving, As nature abhors a vacuum, building owners normally abhor empty space and are driven to fill all spaces to capacity plus about 10%. The stuff you show in there sure looks lonely.

Pat

You are right! When I originally decided that I needed a barn, I figured out all the space that I currently needed could be satisfied by a 30x40 building. I then realized that this would be too small in a few years based on experience at my current residence in Virginia. I will be permanently moving to WV in a few years and I wanted a building that I will likely not grow out of and walla, it's a 40x72 with 16' shed roof! I'm guessing that it will be too small in the next five years...or not...don't worry, there will be plenty of company for the lonely 'botas!

Got the sink installed! It's nice to have hot running water. This is just a gray water sink that goes into a dry well.

That sink puts a whole new version on the term, shop sink. WOW. I hope you found it used someplace!!! At least you know you can start a resturant with it if you ever get the urge!!!!!!!!! hahahha

Very nice, thanks for the updates. Your barn project and pics are probably the very best that I've seen anywhere online. If anybody was to write a book on how to do it, your contractor should. There is a real demand for a really good book by somebody who knows what he's doing, and from what I've seen, there is no such book available today.

I just came across this the other day and read all eleven pages with much enjoyment. I sure would like to see more updates of how the barn is being used.

Looks awesome!

What are you going to do the floor with? Concrete?
The place we just bought has a new 30x40 pole barn with 2 - 16' overhead doors and 20' from the gravel floor to the bottom of the trusses... We are trying to figure out what to do for the floor...
Part may get built like a deck with 3/4 TnG Ply - for a wood shop... then concrete the other half...

Cost of concrete is HUGE...

What are you gonna do?

I know what I'd do living in upstate NY, I'd insulate the floor area to **** and back and heat it! No better way to heat a garage then with a boiler and in floor heat even with the initial expense as it it so nice to be on in the winter. Even with the forced air heat at 70 tonite in the garage to kneel on the floor was still cool to the knee's and hands.

I have a 150000btu torpedo heater with a thermostat. I tested it the other day when the barn was at 35 degrees. It took about an hour to get it to 50 degrees and about another half hour to make it to 60. Then it kicked on about every 15 minutes for about 5 minutes to keep the heat. I am only really there on the weekends so this is working fine, especially with kero at over $3 per gallon...

KEVING: First of all, that barn is a "MASTERPIECE," and the quality of construction is second to none! Working inside that building defines freedom for future projects!

A couple of questions however: how thick was the concrete slab, and was it 5 or 6 sack mix; was rebar included in the pour? If you posted it, I missed it?

Last question, unless it was an optical illusion, the water line looks small for such a large structure? I assume you are on well water also? Would conditions ever exist for a fire sprinkler system? i had a 60 x 60 x 20' metal building built and plumbed it for a future sprinkler system, which will cost approximately $5k. The county here in Calif. restricted me to a 60 AMP service panel, but allowed 400 AMP on the home? They assumed I was going to start a commercial business in an non-commerical area!?

Thanks for the kind words. The concrete is about 4-6 inches thick 3500psi with "fibers" mixed in. It also has the mesh wire throughout.

The main water line into the building is 1" and it is reduced to half inch for the sink only. I have no plans for a sprinker system. I wish I would of thought of that before I started. As of now, there is not further need for additional water inside the building. I do have two frost free hose bibs outside. I'm currently finishing the inside with the insulation and OSB wall board. Then I can move in the 4 post lift and pallet racking!!!

Problem: Snow in the Attic!!!

It appears that the snow we received the other day (3 inches) was blown under the ridge vent and deposited on the insulation. The ridge vent works great with the other elements but it seems the snow can make it in. The bigger problem is that when it melts, the ceiling leaks

My builder was out today and took a look. He suggested blocking the vent by using those foam strips that contour to the surface of the metal. I've asked him to see if they make a version that allows venting.

Do you guys know of anything that can keep the snow out but allow the venting?
