I have a Pats quick change system and it’s working nicely with most of my implements. I decided today to check my snowblower and realized the PTO shaft is too short.

Do any of you guys use PTO adapters for making up the missing 5”? If so which one do you recommend? My blower gearbox shaft uses a double clamp style adapter to retain the coupler on the shaft groove. Most PTO adapters I see have a spring pin you drive through the center of the shaft. My shaft is not drilled.

Any thoughts?

I use one for my brush mower. It has a slip collar with balls to lock it on the spline. The male end looks just like the spline on the tractor. Bought mine at Agri Supply.

Actually, the roll pin hole is offset from center so if your stub shaft has a milled in groove the roll pin engages that. I usr a clam on one myself. Not cheap but very secure.

Didn’t know that, thanks! Looked to be on center in the pics online.

I’m leaning towards clamp on, best I’ve found one is $60.

Actually, they are your best bet because they have no slop. Every collared one I've tried wiggles to a certain extent. If I remember correctly the last one I bought was from All States Ag and it was around 60 bucks as well.

In fact, I bought a collared one at TSC, hooked up my discbine, started cutting and the adapter came loose and the only thing that saved my PTO shaft was I was watching closely. If I hadn't been the shaft would have dug into the ground and bent. It went back for a refund. I think the issue (slop) stems from where they are made and it isn't here either. The TSC (Weasler branded one) had 'Made in India' on it. While I don't have an issue with stuff made in India, it was just plain sloppy on the output shaft. The clamp on ones have no play whatsoever. Any 'oops' with a pto shaft driven implement can be costly real fast and I myself, cannot take that chance with a 30 grand haybine or a round baler or a rake or anything.

Those adapters are just like pto extenders, the problem is, they increase the "side load" on the pto shaft bearings where it comes out of the case.

I will NOT use them for that reason!

What side load? The only side load on a PTO shaft is the static load the universals impart to the shaft itself and that ain't much. I don't follow your train of thought at all. Way more dynamic loading with a sloppy collared extender wobbling around back there.

Every bit of slop/movement ends up adding side load. I've seen the bearing/seal fail from side loading, I just won't have one on my tractors.

Of course, I really don't care what anyone else does to theirs, so there's no argument here from me...

A PTO shaft is already an unsupported shaft, since you can't have a bearing on the other side. Now, extending another 5/6" out, won't really help with the problem. Specially with aluminium transmission cases that some brands still use.

And there is actually more side load on a PTO shaft than what people think.

If I really had to use a PTO extender, I would use it on the implement end. At least it's cheaper and easier to fix a seal or bearing on the implement.

I ended up ordering the clamp style adapter, plan is to mount it on the blower permanently as my other implements have long enough PTO shafts. Thanks for everyone’s input.

No fair, gotta show us what you ended up getting. :p Link?

The side load is only increased as the adapter shaft extends the pto output. Side loading is apparent whenthe pto shaft is at ANY angle other that straight out the back. This is why we have cross bearings/u joints on the shafts, so we can operate at angles. There IS side load, and it is only increased with an extension.

Here it is. Quality is very good, dry run with no snow worked great.

$60 for the adapter is lower cost and effort than replacing the drive line tubes inside the PTO shaft assembly.

A pair of inside and outside drive line tubes is likely to cost around ~$100, and may require a couple of drill holes for roll pins, and possibly cutting a few inches from each side for optimal overall shaft length. If the plastic guard isn't long enough, that's another ~$100.

When adding Pat's Easy Change to a tractor, the added ~4 inches can result in short drive line challenges.

If you're looking to solve that puzzle and don't like standard PTO couplers, adding the "PTO Link" or equivalent alternative will add distance to the PTO connection to match Pat's, but these PTO connection products start around ~$400.
