Seems the government has studied this, and ound that cars with TPMS are more likely to have properly inflated tires....generally, a good thing.

Every person in the USA being granted a million dollars would generally be a good thing too, but it's not the place of the government to make it happen.
...whoops, that remark probably belongs in "friendly politics" delete if necessary...
Well, the NHTSA claims that low tire pressure causes 250,000 accidents annually...that's one for roughly every 1200 people in the country. I'd rather not be the victim in one of those 250K because some moron doesn't check his tires, or can't notice when it's driving strange, so I'm all for anything reasonable that will help reduce those numbers. When you look at what TPMS adds to the cost of a modern car, it seems pretty minor.
I've pulled more bodies, and injured people, out of wrecks than most folks, so I'm somewhat sensitized to the problems caused by stupid people when it comes to their cars. I certainly don't like big government, but when people have stopped taking responsibility for what they do in public, and largely that has already happened, I'm okay with reasonable attempts to at least minimize the damage those stupid people cause. Most people aren't "drivers", they are what I call "steerers"; they get behind the wheel, and do almost nothing but keep the car generally between the lines. If a light on the dash tells them it's time to pull over and get their tires checked, even though they didn't notice it was driving funny, that's a good thing.
I know I was pretty grateful when the light told me I'd picked up a screw in one of my tires on the way to work....I know enough to check my tires, and can feel when things aren't right...it just told me before it got dangerous.
