My new truck has that smart cruise control where it can maintain distance and slow/accelerate automatically. It works very well but really highlights the inability of other people to maintain speed. Quite a few people yo-yo speed while I am just cruising along at constant speed. I don't get it.

One of my other pet peeves is people who will delay getting off the line when the light turns green because they are not paying attention, then they will speed like crazy and probably run the next light as it turns red, while they made the rest of us miss it.

I wait for the people to run the red light first before I go especially if I on the mc..

I got into the habit of looking both ways before entering the intersection. Left first since that's the lane I cross first. You never know when someone isn't paying attention or an emergency vehicle may be busting the light. It's saved me a couple of times. Get into the habit!

I've done that for as long as I can remember. I also am watching before the light changes though, so already know if there's a chance of somebody running it. Aside from actually watching them; you can tell when their light turns yellow because people will start speeding up to try an beat the red.

I've been driving for 35 years, much of it in a major metro area. I can tell you that you will never figure out the psychology behind what motivates some peoples' driving habits. Some of them you can puzzle out, such as the ones speed-matching in the left lane at or below the speed limit because they feel they are a morally assigned extension of the police, but the vast majority just make no sense. One of those is the type of person who drives 5 mph under the speed limit on a 2 lane road but when a passing lane comes up they increase to 10+ over, making it difficult to get around them. Then they are back to slow when it goes back to 2 lane. If drivers ed class would emphasize being respectful and courteous to others I think so many of the issues would be reduced. But too many, as in the rest of society, want to impose their own ideas on everyone else.
The slow actions you described have a different reason. The global warming freaks think they are saving the planet by slowing everyone down. It's an idea of some moron professor at Evergreen State here. It's gone viral among the freaks. It's really bad around Olympia near the college. It's not unusual for I 5 to only be going 50 for no reason.

I don;t think it's environmentalists in big SUVs :)
I think when it comes to driving, some people are just plain jerks.
Don't like anyone in front, don't like to be passed.

I got fed up and passed someone on the other side of the (empty) road who was doing 30 in a 45 since I almost got rear ended by a person coming around the bend behind us.
Guy was cursing me out, didn't think he was dangerous doing 15 below the speed limit.
He did have quite a few dents in the back of the car, sure he thought he was not the cause, it's those stupid people doing close to the speed limit!

The odd thing is that you NEVER hear from those 'slow on the 2-lane, fast when there's a passing lane' folks. If you talk about left lane hogs they'll come out of the woodwork telling you why they're right to drive there because they are driving the speed limit and nobody deserves to drive faster or how they are keeping the road safe or some other self-righteous BS. But I've yet to see anyone come forward to tell why they speed up on passing sections and then slow down again. Which makes me think they truly are oblivious to what they do.

Golly! I hope some day a car maker will invent a simple button to push to activate a speed-maintainer-thing-a-ma-bob.
Just think what a convenience that would be!
Not to mention a courtesy to other motorists!
Hmmmm.

Perhaps they could even call it... "cruise control"

Hmmmm.

Still has the potential to be controlled by a moron. Or a jerk. Better improvement would be to instill courtesy to humanity.

Driverless cars with "google" in charge that will solve the problem.:)

Or better yet on s219's truck we have his On Star, connect to the google through the inter web and have that control how fast he can go. We could have it report back bad driving habits. Theoretically you could put an APP on your phone that could do the reporting now.
Give it time.
Who would have thought we would have a law for buckling up your seat belt. Look at the round about craze. They can sell anything, "long as it makes you safer". be good for the environment too! better yet.

I think Alabama law says to stay to the right. Police can give ticket for staying in the left lane, except to pass. Never seen anyone pulled over.

When pulling a heavy trailer and tractor on highway, I look behind and will pull off and let people pass. Most farm people here will do that. Today's drivers think that they own the highway. I mostly don't speed, but will speed up with someone behind me until there is a place to pass me. I had one today behind me on my bumper. I went up to a higher speed, but solid traffic in front of me. When we got to the 4 lane, half the traffic pulled into the right lane. This guy stayed on my bumper in the right. I slowed back down to the speed limit as there was traffic in front. Guy stayed behind me, on my bumper for the next 3 miles. He could have passed any time.

That's the problem... people treat it as a "Set it and forget it" control. While that may work on flat ground you have to pay attention to maintain your speed on hills.

If you talk about left lane hogs they'll come out of the woodwork telling you why they're right to drive there because they are driving the speed limit
I have a simple answer for that; the law also states "Keep right except to pass." It's also against the law in many states to speed up if somebody's trying to pass you, but that would be a tough one to enforce.

Ultimately, the law I pay attention to is that of physics; "Two solid objects can't occupy the same space at the same time."

I NEVER do use cruise control!
I prefer to pay attention!

That works for you, which is fine. But I can pay attention and use cruise control. I find it nice on longer drives, especially on wide-open interstates when you are doing hundreds of miles in a day.

If I must do "hundreds of miles in a day", I am riding in a sleek aluminum tube, if at all possible.

No doubt that is a good option for most. If you do mostly local driving cruise control isn't all that handy. We are 125 miles from any decent sized airport. That is two hours of driving, plus getting to the airport early enough to park and get through security is another 1-1/2 hours. In 3.5 hours I can be 250 miles towards my destination in my pickup truck, and not breathe recycled air, be on my own schedule, and be able to carry my Leatherman or whatever, carry whatever luggage I want and so forth. Under 500 miles I drive, over 500 miles it depends on flight availability. If I lived near an airport I'd surely fly more. We also benefit in the west (but not in CA) that we have 75-80 MPH speed limits in many states. 5 hours and you are 400 miles down the road.
