The most detailed news report I've seen said something unspecific about a "Mechanical failure of vehicle" - I've definitely not seen anything outside of forums like this one where anyone has claimed what actually caused the fire in a more detailed way.

I rather doubt a chain would normally cause a fire, but a long enough chain dragging when the vehicle is going around a left curve, so the chain is dragging on the edge of the pavement, on a rural road with dry grass right next to the pavement - that could do it... maybe.

My guess is either a vehicle fire, or a breakdown / pullover / parked over grass - but this is speculation.
Maybe it is a magnesium chain?

Take a look at Ultrarunner's link a few posts back. The chain story was the conclusion of a law enforcement professional arson investigator after he found a mangled chain on a trailer that had traversed the exact route of the fifteen roadside fires.

My link in a post farther back goes to law enforcement or CalFire incident chief public statements re the wheel that got ground down starting multiple roadside fires, again what I consider a credible source.

In both cases, with the individual driver identified.

Plenty of fires here have been started with a metal blade cutting dry grass with a brush trimmer...

It is actually negligence in the city to cut with a blade under certain conditions... nylon line OK

I've seen sparks fly from my Dozer Blade hitting rocks...

Given ideal conditions I believe all the scenarios are plausible.

It really does get tinder dry coupled for extreme low humidity and fuel proximity in parts of California.

A brake checker should get arrested for causing an accident. Because that's what happened. And they should pay for the other driver's vehicle repair.

The whole problem comes down to respecting other drivers. First you have the person in front who doesn't respect that other people want to drive at different speeds and doesn't pull over (on a multi-lane road) when the opportunity allows. Then you have the tailgater that drives too close to try to make their point and doesn't respect the other driver's choices. Eventually you end up with an accident or road rage. The key to all this is the FIRST one who was not courteous and respecting of others. Because without the first person being stubborn or a self-imposed speed cop the rest would not happen. Just accept that fact that others don't share your habits and desires and try to not be in anyone else's way or make them do something unsafe. This goes for everyone. If the people in front weren't jerks the people behind wouldn't be either, in most cases.

Brake checker arrested:

Road rage incident leads to injury, arrest | The Columbian

The allegedly angry driver, identified as Duane A. Leichtamer, 55, of Vancouver, stopped suddenly on purpose, troopers said, causing the motorcycle to hit the rear of his sedan.

Marsh was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries.

Leichtamer was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault and reckless driving.

That's good to hear. Glad to hear it includes an assault charge and not just reckless driving. Frankly I think it should be an attempted murder charge because any intentional impact of a car size vehicle with a motorcycle is likely to cause grave injury or death.

You never know when your number is up, but that would be one heII of a bad way to go. No way to see it coming and avoid it.

The myths start! Can't see safety chain sparks traveling very far. Some idiots cigarette butt, yes.

About 8 years back we had string of fires started along US Hwy 20 near the Santiam Pass and it was caused by a DRAGGING safety CHAIN, fires popping up every mile or so and people were stopping to put fire out.

During fire season in Oregon people traveling on forest roads are required to carry shovel, axe and water or fire extinguisher.

My job had my covering Oregon around that time and I recall driving Santiam Pass a number of times and the devastation from fires was remarkable. Not sure if that was the year you mention of not. Beatitiful highway undisturbed.

I've caught my riding mower smoldering in the barn just from the build-up of wet grass under the mower deck. Scared me.
Had that last time I mowed. Had a small dead limb drop into the motor compartment and settle in next to the muffler. Thankfully I smelled it smoldering get when I parked it in the garage and removed.

All the farmer kids used to ride in the back of the pickup everywhere. It was often their only car.

I had something like that round baling last year. The round baler picked up a half inch diameter dead stick and it got stuck next to one of the rollers. By the time I stopped and got the bale out, it was black, charred and smoking.

This was yesterday morning on way to work. No straps or bands of any kind. Not on the flats to the pallet, or the pallet to the truck.

And for the 'Net Nanny's, I was stopped at a red light behind him when I grabbed my phone for the pic.

The good 'ole days! Remember the seats in the back of little Subaru pickups?
Still legal here in Missouri for families if the truck is the only vehicle. I have never seen it, but I live in the suburbs.

Years ago a lady around here cut her grass, parked her riding lawn mower next to the house and went in to take a shower. Next thing you know, the house was on fire!

A number of people have set fire to their house with portable generators as well.
