As per MythBusters Episode 184: Driving in Heels driving in high heels is as safe & fast when racing as normal shoes. I can't see flip flops being any less safe than high heels.

I often wear flipflops getting into the driver's seat
but I kick them off and tuck them somewhere they won't bother the pedals for the duration of the drive.
I much prefer barefoot driving, or wearing comfortable shoes without lugged soles.
I have a newish pair of running/walking shoes (Hoka) which have soles that are too wide and they grip the pedals far too well. It's ok in my truck but not in my stick-shift car, which I often side-slip from pedal to pedal.

I always drive barefoot, nephropathy pain in the feet makes wearing shoes unbelievably painful. So bad I cannot even stand to wear socks, so the shoe (whatever it maybe) is kicked off under the seat until I need to get out.

Well, that is a lot better than flip flops. Loose things on your feet can get in the way of safely braking in an emergency.
So can heavy work boots... especially when they are soggy after working in the rain all day. It's not uncommon for me to drive home barefoot after one of those days.

I believe it's illegal to drive barefoot in PA.
I never wear flip flops, crocs, or anything other than proper shoes when driving. "Proper shoes" may be anything from tennis sneakers to loafers. I may wear work boots or loggers when driving my truck, where pedal spacing and foot well room is much better than the car(s). If I'm going somewhere that the boots will be real messy upon return, I throw a change of sneakers in the back seat, to wear driving home.

I couldn't drive barefoot, my tender clod hoppers haven't been barefooted around in many decades. I don't even go barefoot in the house. It brings out lots of laughter when ever I have attempted to walk on beaches to get in the water.

I've worn flipflops for ages as I've always preferred to be barefoot when possible. Someone once told me it was illegal to drive barefoot because they knew I kick off the flipflops in the car... I had the "opportunity" once to talk to a California Highway Patrol (after getting a ticket... while wearing shoes) and I asked him about that law. He said there's no law against it (in CA of course) and echoed the "better to be barefoot than driving in flipflops or other loose shoes".
I did search to see if it was true nationwide today but it's never made sense to me that you couldn't drive barefoot if you find it comfortable. I have some shoes that definitely get in the way of switching pedals; my bare feet have never surprised me at being wider than I expected.
While on this obviously pertinent (of the thread subject) topic, as yet another segue - do y'all realize that the health code requiring shoes inside restaurants is for the safety of the patrons' feet - because of the likelihood of broken glass injuring bare feet? It has nothing to do with "bare feet are dirty"; a moment's reflection shows you that bare feet aren't any more dirty than shoes. In fact, when I'm barefoot, I'm that much more careful not to step in something yucky, and in the unlikely event it occurs I'm substantially more likely to fully clean the foot and not just scrape it off.

Let me see if I can bring this back on track. The other day my wife was going to help my son pick up a bunch of peat moss and mushroom compost for his eagle project. It was more than could fit in the bed of the pickup so they were going to use the flatbed trailer. It has rails but no solid sides. I have made some plywood sides that are a pain to put in when needing to haul loose material. So she called me at work asking where the sides were so she could have him put them on so they could go get the material when she got off work. With the sides on it is more difficult to strap things down. We decided that the peat moss bails are too big to slide under the rails and there is enough mushroom compost that it will probably be palleted so, no sides so they can tie everything down. The weather was calling for brief heavy rain. I get home and was working on changing oil in some of the vehicles when they pull in. I look at the trailer and there are bails of peat moss one layer high in the front of the trailer and a pallet of compost sitting over the axles. Look loaded pretty well but then I looked again and no straps or ropes in sight. I mentioned to my wife that it should have been tied down. She said it was heavy enough and she decided to take the risk since it was about to rain. I just shook my head. I told my son he better strap it all down before he took it to the job site. The other fun thing was the compost was palleted but not wrapped. I am surprised it all held together strapped or not.
