I'll bet he didn't tell U-Haul what he intended to use that rental for!
u-h: "what are you going to use the flatbed for?"
renter: "f-250 single cab"
u-h "hmm.... *assumes short wb* ok that'll just fit *i'm not paid to gaf*"

state trooper looks interested, glad to see that

Some of us have towed overweight - but not like that!

My only experience with a U-haul car carrier: Neighborhood dealer wouldn't rent one to me, he said they have to see six-lug wheels on the tow vehicle.

Across town there was a larger U-haul dealer. They quizzed me what I was going to tow since their trailer bare, was nearly at my early Trooper's 2,000 lb rated tow capacity. I told them a small garden tractor. Ok.

I loaded my first Yanmar, the YM240 shown in my sig below. And tried a brake check. Fine, that smoked the trailer tires before the Trooper's. Ok. A few miles down the road I realized I could detour to Port of Sacramento to use their truck scale. 8,500 lbs!! Either U-haul's trailer or the Yanmar was a ton over what I expected. The Yanmar's rated weight is 1,800 lbs plus the unknown weight of its loader, the Trooper alone only weighed 3,500, so I was pulling 2.5 tons.

That was a very slow cautious tow to get the trailer 100 miles to the ranch. No issues, aside from way under-powered on a few grades. I wouldn't do it again. That Trooper was great but this was asking too much of it.

Speaking od running over stuff, in that same little MGB I wondered about hitting a moose with I ran over a badger. Could feel and hear it getting rolled under the floorboards.

More exciting was getting a snake caught in the spokes of the front wheel of my first bike. It went around and around several times before exiting close enough to my head that I could feel it.

Thankful that it didn't end up across my neck instead, even though it was only mildly poisonous as I'm sure it was pissed by then.

Ah yes, you guys have elk and deer.

We have roes and deer. Roes being like pygmee goats on long legs. Our deer subspecies is smaller too, than the North American Wapiti deer...

Roes usually just cost you a headlight or grille. Deer can end up in the rear seat if hit hard enough.
The size of the deer really depends on where you are in the US.

Most everywhere in the states they are decent sized.

Deer in Florida are smaller than my German shepherd

They throw a fit if your renting a trailer to haul any more than a small car on it.

Knew a guy who pretty much got tossed out of a uhaul place when he informed them he was gonna use the trailer to haul his tractor into the dealers for some repairs.

Can't really blame them, probably have been burnt more than once by customers overloading trailers but the damage wasn't immediately obvious.

I dont understand that. Why would you need a tractor if your place isnt big enough to park your own trailer ? 🤷‍♂️

Typical priorities of the dumb and poor. I knew a couple, both not the brightest, who bought the biggest TV in their tiny home because it was so cool. Once installed, they found out they had to sit at the dinner table, because watching TV from the couch meant that they had to twist their neck to follow the ball when watching tennis. In the end they sold it on marketplace when someone came by who offered enough for it so they could buy a regular sized TV.

Seeing such a giant TV being moved on the back of a moped, makes me think this couple prioritizes in the same way... if you cant afford personal transportation with a roof over your head, your apartment is probably too small for such a TV.. 🤔🤷‍♂️

Not that its my business, but when the same people nag and nag that money is tight and the world is unfair.... i tell them what i think, blunt but with a gentle smile 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Some people who have tractors don't ever bother getting a trailer or a vehicle that can pull it

I can store dozens, but use maybe 1/year ?
But my jeep will pull it if you're feeling generous :)

You obviously never owned a trailer 🤣🤪

I just hate borrowing. Or lending. Only my mate can use my trailer, the last person who borrowed it always insists they didnt break the lights, but somehow its broken. Go buy your own trailer then, or pay the price at the rental yard: they get payd to tell people that the last person who used it, broke it. I dont.

You can borrow a lot of things from me, except my chainsaws and my trailer. Those are always returned broken and nobody dunnit.

When my mate uses it, at least i know when its broken in the shed untill he fixes it. I bought my own because i want to know its in perfect condition when i need it, and not borrow from people with questionable maintenance standards. Lending it out gives the same problem, you still end up finding out the lights dont work when you pull it out the shed and want to leave in the dark.

I learned not to lend trailers to people. Never knew if a sidewall had been compromised, or if it had been subjected to other hard to see issues.

When asked, I pulled out $20 (enough at the time) and said "Here, go rent one".
A puzzled look generally followed, at which point I said "It's cheaper for me than to fix whatever happens to the trailer".

It didn't take long for the wanna be borrowers to get the hint. Now I have maybe 20 trailers, and nobody has asked in a very long time. Perfect.

The ONLY person that uses my trailer other than me is the SIL and he only uses it IF I go with him.
