Shop Air Compressor set up questions?

it was a busy weekend.

I decided to build the closet roughly 60" x 42" on the outside, with un-equal walls in order to accommodate some shelving I have.
I didn't realize how time consuming using the acoustical seal on all the joints was going to be. it almost doubles the work. the basic steps where, measure, cut, fit, mark, remove, apply sealant, re install, screw.

working alone, the dry wall hoist was a big help.

My ceiling height is about 8'8" which made a few things more complicated then they needed to be.

I put the sheeting up on the inside first, then installed the exterior door, spray foam and insulation.

I still need to trim out the door, and do a little bit of caulking in the inside, but the closet 98% done.

Very nice Construction! But, how does compressor get it’s air to compress? Will you vent your closet to outside air?

Isn’t your compressor 240 volt?

yeap and yeap.

for the time being, I'll have to leave the door open, but once the weather warms up, I'll extend the compressor intake to the out side. I'm concerned my vinyl siding will crack if I try to cut it right now.

And yeah the next step is to pull a dedicated wire from my sub panel. I plan to run it up in the attic.

BLSXJ, nice work.

It wouldn't have worked for your situation, but for folks who don't need a really big air reserve, but want an inside compressor with low noise, check out California Air Tools quiet compressors.

I have a 240v/60 gal Campbell Hausfeld in my shop. It's a great compressor, but loud. For the last few years, the wife has been using it for her crafts business, mostly with brad and pin nailers. Big time overkill. The shop is just down the hall from my office; not ideal from a noise perspective. In our new workshop plans, the shop will be even closer to my office (separated by an insulated wall). I researched and came across the California Air Tools "quiet" compressors. Picked up the 8 gallon model on sale, which the wife has now been using for two weeks. Incredible machine. It's so quiet, I never hear it refill in my office. Wife says it comes on two or three times a day during her normal work, runs for about 30 seconds, and shuts off. Super, super quiet. Wish I had known about these a couple of years ago.

The buggy is what I work on when I finish the the "honey do" list.

it started life off as a Suzuki Samurai... but rust killed it and I decided it was time for a dedicated trail rig.
specs are basically 1.6L, 3 speed auto, kick reduction box, sami 4:1 T-case with dana 44 axles, locked front and back, high steer set up and 35" tires. Jeep YJ springs all hanging off a custom 2x4 frame and tube body.

Nice work on the shop. Hard to not get frustrated when doing those "slow" parts. But your patience will be rewarded for years!!!

I'd enjoy seeing more pics of your buggy whenever you can!!!

Here's a Sami a friend of mine wheeled for several years until the engine blew. Then he had another child, built a new house/shop, and hasn't gotten any extra money to get it going again. It's stretched and runs YJ springs with homemade "revolver" shackles. They make awesome wheeling rigs. :)

Great. I just saw the two 120 volt outlets and didn’t want you to have an OS moment.

I appreciate the concern. all the outlets were install by the previous owner, and I just cant be bothered to move and adjust them. two of them ended up tin the closet and so far they have been great for plunging in my trouble light. I may use one down the road to power some sort of small heater.

and btw ovrszd that sami looks to be in great shape, unfortunately most of the vehicle in Ontario rust away after about 15 years and I'll never find a Samurai like that up here. IF I did I wouldn't want to wheel it in fear of rolling. I'm hoping with a tube body there will be no fear!

My air compressor is mounted outside under a 12' overhang rear porch (of course I'm in a warmer climate). I ran a header through the shop and have drops and a hose real. The one thing I really like is I put an outlet out of the front of my shop at my driveway with a 25' hose and combo tire inflator/blowgun. It's been real handy filling kids bike tires, auto tires, blowing things out etc. My compressor stays energized all the time, but the system is leak free. Occasionally I'll hear it kick on to get the pressure back up, but it really only runs if I'm using it.

I wrestled the compressor into its new home last night.

I noticed the tank seemed to resonate a lot. Has anyone ever stuck a piece of dyna-mat (or other sound deadening) on a compressor?

I've put sound damping on the walls and rubber pads under the compressor feet...

We have a roof mounted compressor and it is on Springs... no sound transmission to below.

Another 'trick' that will deaden the compressor noise is to staple old carpeting to the wall and ceiling surfaces. (and door if installed)
The carpeting will absorb a great majority of the noise.

Also dense rubber under the compressor 'feet' will help a lot.
