I don't know....I think Montgomery (who was in the Navy during WW II) provided the maturity and leadership the role demanded.
I thought this great movie was perfectly cast....of course, neither of us can second guess the director, John Ford!

I was also an aviation rate during my Naval service.

Go Navy......:D

You're probably correct about the casting Roy. John Ford was the master.

I had the extreme pleasure to meet Admiral Bulkeley while I was still on active duty, and had one tour where his son and I were in the same command together. I can't say enough about this MAN (obviously I think highly of him).

The only reason I mentioned John Wayne was that Wayne's typical roles over his career personified many similarities to Admiral Bulkeley. Actually Bulkeley was more than any character ever played by Wayne.

While this move was not specifically listed as a top ten I think it should probably be in there somewhere, if for no other reason than when I saw it with my wife she said "boys don't really act like that do they?"

LOL!!! Maybe that's why I like it that much, it reminds me of the exploits of the summer and all the stupid things we have done - including running from a train (our case was a short tunnel, not a bridge)

First time I saw this movie was in an American library by the US Embassy in Prague - I was getting ready for my TOEFL test and this was a way to listen to spoken english.

OK but do any of these movies have tractors in them?:D :D :D

Well the tractor police will probably be down on you guys NOW.

Chris

Clint Eastwood's "Bridges of Madison County" had a 4020 Deere, and then there was Kevin Bacon and "Footloose".

Neither came CLOSE to making my list of 10 (or top 10,000 for that matter)

That is one of the funniest scenes in a movie I've ever seen.

I think you'd like Wayne in "Wings of Eagles"...also, "In Harm's Way". These are both great movies, just not in my top 10.

As a bit of trivia (just read this on www.imdb.com), "Wings of Eagles" is based upon Naval Aviator Frank Wead's life. Frank Wead eventually became a screen writer in Hollywood. One of his screenplays was "They Were Expendable"

Start of my list:

1 American Graffiti
2 King Rat
3 The Shawshank Redemption
4 Sixth Sence
5 The Italian Connection
6 Man on Fire
7 The Sting
8 Braveheart

American Graffiti is special for me, not that it’s what I would consider a great movie, but because it’s about a couple guys graduating high school in 1962 which is the year I graduated HS. I owned a 32 ford 5 window coupe (no where near as nice as the one in the movie) and a friend owned a White 58 Chev Impala..
The cars, the girls, the music, cruising Main Street, that movie is like magic in its ability to take me back to that time in my life. Ah yes.. those were the days.

You listed "Red Dawn". Man I love that movie. Ironically, it was the last movie I watched just days before I left for Navy bootcamp in August of 1984! What a "motivating" movie to see before basic training!!!

Thanks for listing it, seeing the title brought back memories and reminded me of younger days. I think I'm going to buy it!

Podunk

That's funny! 84 was still big time coldwar and conflict with the USSR seemed to be a real possibility. Red Dawn is chock full of flaws, but I enjoyed it. I can't imagine foreign troops having a fun time taking some of the more rural areas of the USA. Most farmers probably don't have automatic weapons, but there are plenty of old deer rifles out there with folks who know how to use em.

I was on my way to Korea in 92 for a year long tour. I picked up a book to pass the time on the plane. Red Phoenix. Fairly realistic story about a modern Korean war. Made me a bit nervous for a while as N. Korea's leaders have always been a bit nutty and unpredictable.

6 Man on Fire

Your hands duct taped to a stearing wheel... a crazy SOB cuts each finger off one by one and uses a cigarette lighter to cauterize the wounds.

Would you talk?

I'll never forget that scene.
