All we have to do to get a 14% boost in fuel economy is add PS? Boy, talk about a way to reduce our dependency on foreign oil! I'd say those number are just a little too good to be believable.

Steve - Believe or not, this is my experience. If I have done the math wrong, please help me.

Oh and I almost forgot... only alkenes and alkanes? No alkynes? Sorry, had to throw SOMETHING out there about the Organic Chem... which was NOT my best chem class... My suggestion is added if it makes you feel better. That's what I do so it must be right. *RME*

Sorry, no triple bonds in diesel fuels, too unstable.

That makes sense to me. I thought that was the reason, but Chem was a long time ago....

I do find something interesting. When the new ULSF diesel came out GM pushed the sales of the 2007 duramax diesel back to sometime in 2007. The new 2007 model GM pickups are out but you cannot get them with a Duramax. The 2007 GM Pickups that have duramax engines are called 2007 classics and have the same engine that the 2006 models have. I am curious why the delay in the new model duramax engines. I wonder if that is because the 2006 wont meet standards for using the ULSF diesel and they are having to redesign the duramax to properly use the ULSF diesel

Not being a GM guy, I'd say you hit it on the head.. Its the same story with Ford as well.. The '07 regulations are heavy enough that everyone is struggling to meet them.. Ford did the same thing with the '07 Super Duty, its an '06 engine.. The '08 will be available in January('07) with the new 6.4L meeting the new regulations..

No, it is simply the other way around, they are not designing engines so that they will be able to run on ULSD, they are designing engines beacuse ULSD allows the newly designed engines to meet emissions regulations, ie without ULSD there would be NO on-road diesel engines anywhere for anybody. ULSD has ENABLED diesel engines to continue production, without ULSD you'd only have a choice of gasoline powered equipment only (which all runs on ULSGasoline.....)

Yea, I guess I read that wrong... The regulations required ULSD as well as new engines..

Skypup

Are you trying to say that they have to meet new exhaust emission standards. There is nothing that keeps older diesels from using the ULSD. Why would they have to wait till next year to make engines that meet those restrictions. As someone has pointed out california emissions are pretty high already so the automakers have had time to figure out what they need to do. that is the why I figured that the new diesel did not lubricate sufficiently and they needed time to work out that problem. The local GM dealership did say that they were looking into older model duramaxes possibly having to add something to the fuel for lubrication. I also read that biodiesel still has the same lubrication qualities as regular sulfur diesel but not as much emissions.

Yep, I realize it wasnt addressed to me, but exhaust emissions are the driving force behind the fuel change as well.. Take a look at the EPA site for diesel regulations.. They cannot make it retroactive to earlier models because they are incapable of meeting the requirements(thats why they arent produced anymore).. Its not a simple task, its been in the works for years and Claifornia has limited diesel sales because of it..

There have been many discussions about the fuel lubricity, to my understanding its all been addressed. California has been using it troublefree for a few years, so I think the dealer was missinformed..

Read the Wall Street Journal today, both Mercedes and Volkswagen are introducing turbodiesels that will be sold in ALL 50 STATES for the first time ever, including Kalifornia.

So is Honda, and GM is testing a new 6.0 liter turbodiesel (their own, not Isuzu's) in their pickups and Cadillacs. I talked to a couple of the GM Turbodiesel engineers at the race track last week and they are ALL SMILES saying the new turbodiesel puts grins on everyone's faces that drive the torque monster on their Proving Grounds! :D

The ONLY reason any of this is even possible is ULSD!!! :D
