Windows 10

I upgraded 3 of our windows 7 computers to win 10. It seems to be OK. Recently I upgraded my ham shack computer from xp to win 7 and I think it will stay there. I had enough trouble getting drivers to work for some of my older hardware when going from xp to win 7. Win 7 is a good stable easy to use Operating system, and you ain't going to gain anything going to win 10. And as microsoft seems to have designs on shafting us all with a future charge for the "service" which makes sense, otherwise why would they have given it to us for "free", it might be prudent to stay on 7. I've had problems with my little ASUS notebook freezing temporarily with Win 10. Very annoying having to wait for 10-20 seconds every few minutes for it to unfreeze. I just installed the latest updates hoping it would help. Didn't. On a whim, I disabled the Microsoft OneDrive that installs with Win 10. Seems to have fixed it.

New "cloud" features are great - unless they break other fundamental stuff.

I upgraded 2 desktops and 3 laptops to Win 10 without any major issues. I did have some old programs on one of my desktops that did survive the upgrade as they would not run on Win 10. It is as stable as Win 7 which is what all the machines were running.

Just FYI Win 7 is in extended support until 2020 which means only security fixes are included in updates. If you use Internet Explorer the IE11 is the only browser supported for Win 7 or Win 8.1.

Its like any other upgrade from one version of Windows to another. You tweak to your preferences, deal with its idiosyncracies and pretty soon its just your pc operating system. I moved from Win 7 to Win 10 and don't see much difference really.

Last week I had a business computer with XP and Microsoft money (which is no longer supported) and the hard drive was going bad. I cloned the hard drive because I had lots of business related contacts and was hoping to limp along until I could find a way to transfer the data.

Of course I got a pop up from Microsoft noticing the change in the computer and it locked up all Microsft software so no changes could be made until I installed the original disc. Remarkably I had the disc from 9 years ago but it still didn't recognize it.

Microsoft was of no help, Word, Access and excell wouldn't work even though I have the original, paid for installation discs.

Out of desperation I purchased a new computer with Windows 10. (There is no free upgrade for XP or Vista) Of course, I lost all information and functionality of Microsoft Money. Additionally my Microsoft Office 2010 wouldn't install and I had to purchase the 2016 version, which is now a yearly screwing, er I mean fee.

I also had to purchase a new accounting software, Quickbooks Pro 2016 and it won't load onto Windows 10 but did install on a desktop publishing work station with Windows 7 professional.

The new Windows 10 Interface is not very intuitive and there is no way to switch to a more conventional look like in previous editions.

I wouldn't switch if you didn't absolutely need to and will not be updating my desktop publishing or video editing computers any time soon. Compatibility with older Microsoft products is terrible (I'm sure it on purpose) but I was able to make it work with a HP all in one printer that is a year old.

Good luck! (Don't do it!)
.
When MS stop supporting Money they released a version called MS Money Sunset which was a free download. When my old xp machine died and I went to a new Win 8 machine, then updated to Win 10. I Installed MS Money Sunset done a backup restore and it's working just fine.
One of the reasons people run it to problems with old software is it's 16 Bit which will run on a 32 Bit OS most of the time, but when you upgrade to the new 64 Bit OS it won't run 16 Bit software.

I have Win 8.1 on one computer. I tried Win 10 and didn't like it, went back to 8.1 which I have configured more like an older version. All they do on a new release is shuffle everything around so you can't do anything without a long learning curve.

I'm solving the Microsoft 10 problem by purchasing Mac Computers. We still have XP running in one machine used daily for email and occasional surfing etc. It's the fastest and best operating machine we have of the Micro Crap machines.

‏ I've been a very bad girl,' she said, biting her lip. 'I need to be punished.'
'Very well,' he said and installed Windows 10 on her laptop.

First turn OFF automatic updates. Then go to Programs & Features in Control Panel and select view updates. You will want to uninstall Windows Update KB3035583. This update installes the GWX (Get Windows 10 Annoyance Pest add-in) which you can see in the menubar at the bottom of the screen. Then you need to change Windows Updates from Automatic to either " Don't freakin' bother me, ever" or at least "Don't do anything without my permission", otherwise it gets shoved onto your machine all over again the next day. There is somebody at MS that I'd like to beat until bloody for trying to force me to use their designed obsolescent operating system. Same for Acrobat stuff that latches onto my keystrokes and mouseclicks looking for some action to take on their behalf.

Some of your software (maybe Quicken) won't work right or won't even load in Windows 10. My old Office 2003 wouldn't even load in it, for instance. I'd been using it in Windows 7.

I think 10 is better than 7, and some say it's better than 8, but stuff made for 8 apparently works okay on 10, but not necessarily stuff for before 8.
