Windows 10

Windows 10 home (the free one you're talking about) doesn't support remote controlling of a computer so I'm sticking with Windows 7. Windows 7 will be supported for about another 4 years and by then I will be wanting new hardware. Not worth it to upgrade now just to save a $100. I'll upgrade down the road on my own time frame.
Have you tried RealVNC I have been using it since XP went away and find it as good or better the Remote Desktop. I run 2 desktop servers and a laptop and have no monitors on either server works great I can even login with Team Viewer when I am away from home.

I'm just simply not interested in Windows 10. In fact, I was perfectly happy with the operation of XP on my old desktop. Unfortunately, I had to move to 8.1 when I bought a new laptop (space issue at the new house). That was harrowing enough for me. I lost the function of some of my older music programs, and others had to be updated (at an additional cost) to work correctly on the new OS. Upgrade yet again just a few years later? No thanks. Not even for "free."

You should.. Win10 works and functions much better than Win 8/8.1

For me personally, whether or not Windows 10 is any good or not is beside the point that 90% of the population simply doesn't use much less need more than WinXP or Win7. I was an IT tech back in the DOS days and continued through WinXP and NT 4.0. I remember OS's that worked on 3.5in floppy disks. Ok, sure, we are well beyond floppy disk days, but I've watched Windows go from a dozen 3.5in floppy disks to now over a gigabyte in disk space just for the OS alone. Sure, there are people who will take advantage of the newer features but I doubt the majority of users do. Windows 10 is Microsoft's most advanced data collection OS ever. Some security groups have documented over 100 outbound connections on a fresh install with nothing else loaded. That just bugs me.

So you dont have an iPhone/iPad or Android/Chromebook then either?

I agree 100% with JFoy - I'm sure that I use a very small percentage of the features of Windows 7. 8.1 Pro on my other (new) PC is confusing. I like the older Classic menu program personally. And no, I don't have an IPhone, etc. In fact, I would be really happy if we could get cell phone signals out here in the boonies!

Microsoft can go pond sand! Who are they to tell me anything.

98SE did everything that 10 does. Why so much more ram and HD space required ?
Not so much. If you had said Windows 2000, I MIGHT have given you a point.
Wifi on 98 was limited to aftermarket software. Built in on XP and much improved in 7.
Security was pretty much nonexistent on 98, its pretty good on XP and higher. Win 7 improved it even more.

As the most widely used operating system, Windows is also the most likely target for people that wish you harm. They can patch and patch and patch but sooner or later it's simply better to start fresh. That is Win10 in a nutshell. I really don't notice much difference from previous versions and after a single "incident" with a patch that ate up a big chunk of my monthly data allowance I have no problems with it.

I am trying out Linux Mint 18 now and so far I like it. I have been looking for an alternative to Microsoft to use at home and Linux is looking pretty good. I believe Microsoft is heading toward a subscription based operating system. That just don't set well with me. I will still be using it at work but don't necessarily have to at home.

According to the article I posted earlier after the free update of Windows 10 is done the updates will no longer be optional. So any new feature or service or data collecting they want to implement will no longer be at your discretion. I for one will not have anything to do with Windows 10 as it is now and what appears to be the direction they are going.

Windows 10 is bogus on all machines EXCEPT for those install in production.

I've never seen anyone happy with their resulting data crunching when they've upgraded from 7,8 or 8.1 to 10.

Even my Laptop 10 is a nightmare.

We've already spent $3K on one iMac.

We'll complete the change over with this PC next year and never look back at Microsoft but to thumb our nose.

Had enough replacing PCs every two years for various reasons.

Once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

Switching OS is not exactly plug and play to many/most of us.
Now that I am running W10, if I choose to switch to a different OS, just how
hard is that? If I remove W10 in the future, will it fully remove or will it leave
undesired software on my machine? with a dual mode/boot machine, is it possible for W10
to track in the background? If the software has spawned functionality that has been stored
outside of the Windows folder, perhaps sunk deep somewhere hard to find, have I just put a mole
of sorts in my pc?

Pretty sure someone will have an aftermarket full delete capability, and perhaps already does. But I don't trust
Microsoft to pack out whatever they packed in.

I did a dual boot Win 10 and Win 7. With the free upgrade system you could keep the key for both as valid. I will stick with 7 for now, although 10 with classic start menu program is not bad. When the 7 support ends I can boot up in 10.

Well, I like Win 7. Have used it at work for years.

A few years back I bought a laptop that came w Win 8. Hated it but was afraid to upgrade. Finally did a few weeks ago. No major probs. Went pretty much smoothly. Turned off all the upgrade/data mining that I could. No quite the same as 7 but much better than 8. The comp boots a lot quicker now too.

One unexpected outcome though... My fan runs much less and the computer runs much cooler. Didn't see that one coming!

found my first W10 upgrade unhappiness; my HP Officejet prints just fine, but now the scanner won't work, seems confused as to where to send the data. Says the problem is with the line or my pc; well it prints so not the line...

Maybe updating the driver will fix? Latest driver should be available at HP website.

Make sure that the Folder the scanner sends the files to have Read and WRITE permissions. Had the same issue with a scanner and that was the problem.
