Your towing rigs and trailers

What are y'all thoughts on this set-up?

I have almost the same setup. Some days I think its all a perfect marriage. Other days I wish my trailer was a few feet longer. Most days I love my tractor, some days I really wish I had more power

Traded in my 1500 Ram a couple months ago and so far the 2500HD has been great. 2011 Silverado 2500HD. What a difference in springs and when loaded. I feel much safer and not overloaded.

Nice truck!

Went to pick up a new gun safe and didn't have enough help to tip it into the bed of the truck, so loaded the 5240 on the trailer and made easy work of it.

Thinking of a 2006 F350 Crew Cab Diesel that I heard about.

Truck sounds great and would detail out nice... good paint, interior... except really dusty from being out on a farm...

15k is asking... miles 160k.

Had head studs replaced under warranty with the upgrade... only big ticket item and was covered.

Read the thread, its recent, on 6.0 Fords. Look at the photos of the cab lifted off the truck. Is that something you want to mess with? No doubt the Ford guys will say they have had such great luck with them and have only replaced the tires. I'd say the next thing it would need would be oil and EGR cooler. They are a known problem. Me personally, I wouldn't touch it unless you like to wrench and want to bullet proof it.

I'm not one to jump in... on the other hand my "New" truck is a 1991 Silverado and the my everyday work truck is a 1985 G20 Van.

No complaints and they have both been very economical and so far zero engine of fuel system repairs... have changed out radiators on both and one heater core plus water pumps on both and starters too.

If I did buy... it would be for more towing capacity... the G20 is rated for over 10k and so equipped... problem is it weighs close to 9k with racks and plumbing supplies and has a 305 V8... so there is nothing left to tow with...

The Silverado is a half ton and the one I use to tow 7,000 lbs of loaded trailers... it does OK with the HO 350...

Thought about a Sprinter Diesel and then talked to a few owners and they have not been trouble free...

Don't really know what to do...

By the way... the 2006 F350 I saw regularly tows a gooseneck with a JD 450 dozer with backhoe... pretty impressive.

I don't know if this qualifies, but it is what I use to haul my tractors. The new trucks with all the EPA crud on the engines really didn't appeal to me. I'd rather have something I could fix without needing a computer and PHD in electronics. I found this 1976 White for a very reasonable price and a trailer to go with it. The mileage could be better, but considering the whole thing was less than $6k I can afford some fuel.

You're my new hero! :)

I've come close to pulling the trigger on an older COE like yours, but the insurance and registration boogeyman scared me away. Also I'm not sure i could convince authorities that all my hauling is non-commercial (I don't haul for hire, but I have a small business and buy a lot of stuff at estate/warehouse sales).

Very cool setup you have there. What are the specs on the drivetrain?

I like it!

Not an option here for most... large diesel rigs with non compliant engines are being forced off the road and even farm use has very strict limitations...

A while back I started a thread about an older Gentleman I know with an immaculate 2003 Dump Truck that he bought new and couldn't give away because the cost to re-power was north of 20k

Insurance and legislation like UR is talking about are probably the limiting factors. If one can clear those hurdles, with what a new one-ton costs, going with a deal like that you can buy a lot of diesel fuel.

I like the simplicity of the older designs - with just minimal maintenance, they will run a long time...

While it costs money to run/maintain any machine - I'm a fan of not having monthly payments.... if times get tough, you can just drive less, or park it - with no foul incurred.

Another

I often thought if I needed a really heavy-duty tow vehicle, I would do something like this:

Lackey Sailing, LLC | Boatbuilders, Boat Restorers, and Marine Surveyors

Don't know if it has a 2 speed axle, but that would be nice to have. I assume that this one has hdyraulic brakes, since he installed an air compressor to supply air to the trailer he pulls (suspension, not air brakes).

Of course, there is the CDL issue, as I would not qualify for the "farm use" exemption in this state.
