How do you put your tire chains on ?

Over time I have found that the tighter the chains are installed, the less they will wear.
Also less damage to fenders etc and for sure less nerve racking (clank clank etc).

On the otherhand in our area, chains and studs are not permitted on vehicles over a certain weight.

I've got 2 link ladder chains on my front R4s. They are on very tight yet have settled between the lugs. I was thinking... why not modify to set the cross chains on a diagonal? Anyone tried this?

My experience says they are too tight. A bit loose and they will drop out of the lugs and chances are not stay there next time around the tire. The main reason I don't advocate real tight chains.
And they don't have to be so loose they hit the fenders. :)

A pic of your chains with all the cross chains settled between the lugs would be neat to see. :)

I agree, a little loose helps them clean themselves of mud and drop out from between the lugs. Guess it depends on your clearances. While I definitely wouldn't want them hitting my fenders, how fast do you drive a tractor with chains anyway?.

I have no problem WOT in high range, full pedal. That isn't normal plowing speed however. :D

That is simply (to me) because the chains do not fit the tires.
(noting the pic shown in the link, several links in the side chains could be removed).

If the side chains were cut to the right length then it wouldn't happen. And in addition, wouldn't need the chain tighteners. :)

Not saying that packing in mud doesn't contribute some to the dilema too. :D

Now you are confusing me here. Are you saying make them tighter? Couple post back on this thread you said a bit loose is good.
BTW, Horse manure and sawdust not mud!

:D :D I hear ya!

From the pic, the side chains looked to be too long. That lets the cross chains loose enough so they can squirm around and settle into and between the lugs. My cross chains are a bit loose (I just hand tighten the connectors) but cannot nestle in between my lugs. At least some part of the cross chain seems to be always on top of the lug.

Now I admit that I haven't tried them out in horse manure mixed with sawdust. That might just be a formidable mixture to horse around in with my tractor. :D (still might be fun tho)

Thanks. Every time I get into the horse manure pile it's like mud wrestling on a tractor, the stuff is so soft and for quite a depth. Ag tires just dig a hole. The chains seem to do ok in the snow.
